Hi All,
Your thoughts on Molokai or Lanai for a day trip?
Just to hang out and relax. And who do you use to get there?
Thanks
Molokai or Lanai for day tripWe are using Paragon to go on their Lanai Snorkel. We decided to go to Lanai over the snorkel to Molokini as it actually stops at Lanai where we can snorkel or use the beach. The molokini tour just snorkels as there is no beach. I am not sure about a Molokai tour though...
After considering Trilogy and Paragon, we decided on Paragon for a few reasons:
1. The price-it was considerably cheaper.
2. While Trilogy offers a very nice hot lunch and Paragon offers only a picnic style lunch, we decided we weren%26#39;t going for the food.
3. I had heard from others who have sailed both that many liked Paragon just a bit better. They try (weather permitting) to actually sail most of the way versus using their motors. This really appealed to us.
4. Paragon also does an ocean swim as Trilogy does not.
Basically, I don%26#39;t think you can go wrong with either company, just a matter of personal preference. We haven%26#39;t gone yet; we sail with them in a few weeks. I can update you when we get back as to how it went.
Molokai or Lanai for day tripWe loved the trilogy sunset cruise to Lanai...don%26#39;t have to get up super early. Great food, great crew TONS of whales (march) snorkeling on lanai, we chose the island tour over the raft ride and cruised home to a lovely sunset. Then stopped at Whaler%26#39;s Village on the way back to the condo for Hula Pie, if you want to stay in Lahaina just walk up Front street to Kimos and get it there. It is a great cruise.
We also went on the Trilogy Lanai Sunset Tour. It was fantastic! The crew was attentive to all of our needs. They brought us food and drink throughout the day. The later start in the day (10 a.m.) worked much better for us, especially since we were staying in Wailea. The snorkeling on Lanai is spectacular. You can also go on a guided island tour if you%26#39;d like or just relax on the beach. The great thing about this tour is that the crew members carefully keep watch while everyone snorkels. It gave us such a comfort level to know that they were watching over us! The finale of our Lanai visit was a yummy grilled chicken and asian noodle dinner prepared by the crew. Then we sailed back to Maui. I highly recommend the Lanai tour.
Aloha mauiluvr,
I can only give you advice on Lana%26#39;i, still haven%26#39;t made it to Molola%26#39;i yet. The least expensive way to get to either island is via the ferry ($50/person round trip). You don%26#39;t get the guided experience like with Paragon or Trilogy, but this lets you be more independent. Here is the link to the ferry%26#39;s website:

My only warning about going to Lana%26#39;i for a day trip, is that you won%26#39;t want to return to the crowds and traffic on Maui at the end of the day. ;-)
Have a great Hawaiian vacation!

Thank You All, for the great info.
I do like the idea of taking the ferry, what about rental car? yes/no?
Try a jeep on the island of Lana`i, as some of the most spectacular beaches in the islands can only be accessed off-road. But, it%26#39;s either sandy beaches or dirt roads (and plenty of red dirt) so it%26#39;s easy driving. It%26#39;s a bit expensive, but worth the money.
My wife and I did the one day trip to Molokai on our honeymoon 3 years ago. We will never do it again. The ';ferry'; that we went over on was on the ';Molokai Princess'; or something to that effect. I get easily sea-sick (apparently) and it was not a fun ride at all. Not to mention it%26#39;s 1.5 hours, so if you easily get sick, could make for a long day. I had taken Dramamine before our trip and it did nothing to help. The channel between Maui/Lanai/Molokai is very rough water...even more so in the afternoon. Molokai is very beautiful and very laid back, but one time is enough for us.
I can%26#39;t remember the name of the company that arranged the trip for us, but it contained the to/from ferry ride and a rental car while on Molokai. The morning boat ride also includes breakfast, but that ended up being fish food.
I%26#39;d say Lanai! You can relax on the closest beach or snorkel...or do exactly as Honu-lover said. Rent a jeep and explore the isle. (It%26#39;s awesome.) To get some ideas for Lanai, why don%26#39;t you post also on the Lanai forum?
Just as the others said, you take the ferry over, walk about 10-15 minutes to the beach from the harbor and lounge on the beach (bring your own towel and beach mat), snorkel (bring gear along from Maui as there is none to rent on Lana%26#39;i), explore the tidal pools, check out the Four Seasons Manele Bay, and hike around the area. You could eat lunch at the open air Ocean Grill at Manele and make a full day ot it.
If you want to see the rest of the island you will need to rent a Jeep as most of the interesting places to see are only accessable via 4x4. You can also explore the small town, Lana%26#39;i City, and the Lodge at Koele. It takes at least a full day to see all the sites on Jeep, so if you want to do some beach time, you won%26#39;t see it all. I recommend renting from Adventure Lana%26#39;i Ecocentre. Here is a link to their website for more info, but you will have to call them to make reservations:

Doc, you%26#39;re always full of useful and great information! (You forgot to tell the OP to put on lots of sunscreen!)
Just imagine Caddy with bad sunburn over 85% of his body. No please don%26#39;t! (Wink Doc) :(
