costco alamo

there has been some better prices posted -- not outragous but its a mai tai

nothing yet from budget -- still holding firm

costco alamo

lougee - a mai tai is always good, so for all your efforts and great reporting - cheers!!

costco alamo

I got what I would consider to be a great rate from Alamo using Costco. I booked an SUV for 9.5 days for $321 including all taxes and charges. That was far better than anything else I had found and boy, did I search!

Lougee, don%26#39;t keep us in suspenders!! Please share these prices with us!!

Just wanted to say ';thanks'; for your posts about car rentals. I%26#39;m not at that point yet but it%26#39;s nice to know it%26#39;s one thing I don%26#39;t have to spend weeks researching. LOL

keep checking --- this past april a got a smaller suv for 7 days for 120.87 incl all taxes etc --keep looking

The thing I love about car rentals, is that if you find a better price, you can cancel your reservation with no penalty! I have also had good luck with Costco, but I start with Orbitz, so I can what the general rates are at all the main companies. Then I go through Costco to the company with the best rate. I can usually save at least another 10-15%. Then I continue to check rates about once a month, just to see if anyone has come down at all.

Thanks! I didn%26#39;t think I could do any better, but I just rebooked for 14 days for $247 (includes taxes and fees) My best price so far was $262! I%26#39;ll have a drink and toast you, Lou!

Lougee, thanks for the advice. I%26#39;ll keep on checkin%26#39;!

I just got my midsize rental for 9 days (starting this Tuesday) down another few dollars to $181.25.

Don%26#39;t think I%26#39;m gonna beat that. Just hoping it will be enough space for my family of 5 while we%26#39;re there. I just can%26#39;t justify the price they are asking for a minivan or SUV.

Csirak-

Is that going to be enough room for your family plus luggage? I don%26#39;t know how you all pack but knowing us, we will have at least 4 bags plus my DH%26#39;s clubs. I know we always overpack so we are extreme but we will definitely need an SUV. I wanted a convertible, but I had to part with that idea...sniff, sniff

circle island tour or makani catamaran???

Hi all,

Thanks so much for all your suggestions on my travel itinerary to hawaii.. We r in Hawaii and enjoying each and every moment here! Its lots of fun!! Now I have a doubt.. I have 2 options - Circle island tour (thr%26#39; gooahucard) or the makani catamaran one! We r confused here. which one would you all recommend me, my husband and my 2 yr old son? Do you think the catamaran is advisable for a 2 yr old? We r planning to do either one tomorrow! so pls advice..Thanks.

circle island tour or makani catamaran???

That%26#39;s a tough choice. I%26#39;ve seen the Makani from shore and it doesn%26#39;t seem to have a lot of walking around room being a catamaran. However, an hours long bus tour with a 2 year old doesn%26#39;t sound too good either. I guess the choice has to be made on your 2 year old%26#39;s attention span and the safety factor of being at sea.

A regular boat with more floor space might be an option such as Star Cruises (Star of Honolulu, Starlet I and II)

circle island tour or makani catamaran???

I had the GO Card and did both. For you I think the tour would be too much. You will probably want the sail, either breakfast or lunch, and work in a couple other things. Our day we did Hanauma Bay in the morning, the sail for lunch, and back to Waikiki for an outrigger canoe paddle (to get the most from the card). FWIW.

  • Oahu Hawaii Wedding - Planner Suggestion

    Hello,

I am looking for a reliable wedding company in Oahu Hawaii. Do you have any recommendations. I am particularly interested in ahawaiiwedding.com and sweethawaiiwedding.com.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Oahu Hawaii Wedding - Planner Suggestion

We used Weddings of Hawaii, http://www.affordableweddingshawaii.com/

They were extremely helpful and took the stress out of planning a destination wedding. I was afraid of having an ';assembly line wedding';, but it was far from that! We married at Diamond Head Beach Park with only bride, groom, reverend and photographer!! It was an amazing experience and 5 years later I wouldn%26#39;t change a thing!! They offered something for every budget...packages with the option of adding anything you want!

Oahu Hawaii Wedding - Planner Suggestion

Another option, depending on your preferences, would be to work through your hotel.

    parking

Does anyone know if Outrigger Waikiki allows in and out of their hotel valet parking? We will be there in six days and are staying for five nights. We can%26#39;t wait!

    Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation

    Hi All,

We are planning a trip to Kauai this December(2008) and I have been researching accomodations and within our budget this seems to be a nice fit. We wanted a place where it is close to a swimmable beach. One thing I then noticed is this place doesn%26#39;t have an A/C, the only reason I am asking for advice on this is we will be travelling with our 20 month old daughter, if it were just the two of us I wouldn%26#39;t have had any second thoughts. Please advice with your experiences.

    Thank you.

    regards,

    Sreedhart

    Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation

We have stayed twice at Kiahuna - April and December - and loved it! Coming back in November, in fact. The lack of air conditioning was never a problem, either time. You will get more knowlegeable replies here, I am sure, but we certainly found the breezes and overhead fans more than sufficient. We had our teenagers with us and they can be downright picky sometimes, especially about their ';creature comforts';. They loved Kiahuna as much as we do - and I%26#39;m sure you will, too. You little one should be just fine. There seemed to be lots of young families at Kiahuna.

Kiahuna is wonderful - look forward to your time there! As well as lovely and well-equipped condos, the grounds are gorgeous and the staff is terrific. Like I said, we love Kiahuna. I think you will, too.

    Aloha

    Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation

Thank you for the quick reply and do appreciate your input on the resort. As of now we are almost decided on Kiahuna plantation, I wanted to check with fellow travellers before we pulled the trigger :)

    Thank you.

    regards,

    Sreedhart

    Aloha!

If the lack of A/C is a concern, check out the Outrigger Waipouli on the east side...great pool, A/C in the condos, full kitchen and a washer/dryer in the unit. The Outrigger Waipouli is not too far from the Safeway market as well.

    Bryan Brown

    BBrown9825@aol.com

The beach adjacent to Outrigger Waipouli from what I have read is not swimmable....any thoughts????

    Thank you.

    regards,

    Sreedhart

Correct. I would not consider the beach at Waipouli swimmable. It does have the AC but you are losing that fantastic beach in front of Kiahuna Plantation.

I%26#39;ve stayed at Kiahuna twice and it would be my choice. You don%26#39;t need AC in December. Kiahuna is also built with lots of cross-ventilation. Hotel rooms and some condos NEED air conditioning because of their architecture ( no cross ventilation). Kiahuna is built plantation style to take advantage of the trade winds. At least that has been my personal experience there.

You should love Kiahuna. It%26#39;s in a class by itself on Kauai. Only condo resort on the south shore that sits right on the beach. The furthest buildings back are still only a short 5-10 minute walk to the sand. Lovely gardens and grounds to walk through.

    Napaguy...Thank you for the input

The more we read about Kiahuna plantation the more we are leaning towards it...

We will be there for 7 days in Dec.... looking forward and can%26#39;t wait to get there...

Did anyone suggestion the new Marriott Wai%26#39;ohai at poipu beach. It has air conditioning and is on one of the top 10 beaches in the world!

A/C is hard to find in Kauai as a rule unless you are staying in hotels. There are a few owners who have put them in for themselves and their guests. Electric rates are outrageously expensive in Hawaii and this seems to drive the decision.

Kiahuna is on a lovely beach, fabulous gardens, well maintained, however be prepared for smallish accomodations.

We stayed at Kiahuna Plantation in January several years ago. We thought it was fantastic. The beach was good, many restaurants in the area, a good golf course nearby, and the accommodations fine. We enjoyed the maid service each day, although it felt like a condo. The cross ventilation kept us cool all evening. We would go back in a minute.

I truly think you will not need a/c in December. I was there last December and I actually needed a sweater many days and nights. The condos at Kiahuna Plantation vary in decor, so if that is an issue with you (you want one updated for instance) please sure to do your research. These units are individually owned. If you are just planning now for Christmas, some of the better condos are booked I am sure.

    Good luck.

We are planning to be there the second week of Dec, so it will not be during christmas.... also planning to book through Outrigger....

So far this has been the choice that fits our budget... the research still continues....

I would like to thank all of you for taking time to post your suggestions and if anyone can share their experiences with booking thru Outrigger and the units they manage that will be greatly helpful...

    Thanks again....

    regards,

    Sreedhar

    Surfing Lessons on Maui

My fiance and I will be in Maui next month and would like to take a 2 hour surf lesson. Just by a google search there appear to be tons of companies out there.

Does anyone have any recommendations on which one to use or did anyone have a good experience with any of the Maui providers?

    Surfing Lessons on Maui

We did a lesson with Goofy Foot in Lahaina and Id definitely use them again we had no problems. Make sure you buy the photos the are really funny to look at afterwards.

    Surfing Lessons on Maui

We also used Goofy this summer. Both of my girls were up on the boards but let me warn you, its crowded. Most of the surf schools use the area and that day it was like bumper ball. Later on in the day (we did later morning lesson) it wasn%26#39;t as bad. Good instructors, no complaints.

Goofy Foot is the way to go! My husband and I went the other day and had a blast. Got up on the board our first try. Our instructor was Matt, who I highly recommend! Make sure you%26#39;re up for it though... lots of paddling. The guys that were in the other group quit... too much work for them. What a waste of money! Anyways, we got the pictures which was really worth it. You don%26#39;t want to be taking pics while your trying to learn. The early morning class is the best. The wind hasn%26#39;t picked up yet, so the ocean is glass. Also, we were the first ones out and had first dibs on the waves. You can also rent surf boards their too. $15 for 2 hours... not bad! We are going again in a few days...wish us luck!!

Tito, where are you staying? If you are staying south Maui there is no reason to drive to Lahaina for a surf lesson. The actual instructor is more important than the company. I personally would go for a private lesson. If you are staying south Maui, check out Maui Waveriders.

Big Kahuna in Kihei is great if you are staying in South Maui. Here is their web address www.bigkahunaadventures.com

I%26#39;m staying at the Sheraton so Goofy Foot is probably the way to go. Thanks!

    grand hyatt questions

We will be staying at the Grand Hyatt in November. I would appreciate finding out if it is possible to get to nearby beaches and restaurants without a car.

Can we book reasonable tours/activities through the hotel such as ziplining or should we do these on our own?

Can you please recommend restaurants that are close to Grand Hyatt? How does one get to these restaurants without a car; are taxis easy to get from this location?

    Thanks

    grand hyatt questions

I guess it depends how far you are willing to walk. Most of the good restaurants and other beaches are quite a hike from the Hyatt. You really need to rent a car. Taxis are very expensive and there are not a lot of them. You won%26#39;t find a cab stand at the Hyatt. Driving on Kauai is very easy. It is primarily two lane roads. You will miss out on the incredible beauty of many parts of Kauai unless you get a car.

As far as restaurants in the Poipu area that are good, Plantation Gardens at Kiahuna Plantation, the Beachhouse, Roy%26#39;s get good reviews (usually). Brennecke%26#39;s is a good place for lunch with an ocean view.

We always booked our own activities, so I can%26#39;t really comment on the concierge desk at the Hyatt.

    grand hyatt questions

If this is your first time visiting Kauai, you might want to use the hotel concierge for booking tours and activities. You can also check online and make all of your arrangements directly with a lot of the companies that offer these.

Beaches and restaurants nearby will be difficult to reach without a rental car. Unless your goal is to simply soak up the resort atmosphere at the Hyatt not leave the resort, you really do need a car. As the previous poster says, you will miss so much without a rental car and the roads on the island are very easy to drive on.

    Aloha from Kaua`i!

I live here in the Po`ipu area and work as narrator at the Grand Hyatt for the torchlighting ceremony - so I%26#39;ll do my best to answer you!

While it is possible to walk to Brennecke%26#39;s and Po`ipu Beach Park from the Hyatt - it is a pretty decent hike if you are carrying lots of stuff - it is 5 minutes by car though, so that usually is the best option.

If you do decide to walk - just leave the Hyatt thru the main gates and turn left (you%26#39;ll be on Po`ipu Rd.) - after about 2 blocks you%26#39;ll see Po`ipu Kai and if you go into their parking lot, you will have a rock-bordered pathway that goes thru their property and deposits you on Pe`e Road - just across from Brennecke%26#39;s Beach - this is probably about a 10-15 minute walk.

The concierge at the Hyatt is excellent - they can very easily arrange any type of activities for you such as tours or ziplining - they are right in the main lobby of the Hyatt and there are usually about 3-4 concierge on duty at any one time.

Restaurants that are closeby the Hyatt: Po`ipu Beach Broiler, Casa di Amici, Brennecke%26#39;s Beach Broiler,

Plantation Gardens, Keoki%26#39;s Paradise, Roy%26#39;s, The Beach House - all of these are very close to the Hyatt and are in the immediate Po%26#39;ipu Beach area. Po`ipu Beach Broiler is located at Po`ipu Kai and is walkable - as would be Brennecke%26#39;s Beach Broiler and Casa di Amici if you use the pathway I mentioned above.

You can get a taxi at the Hyatt - just call the bell desk and ask for one - they are always closeby. South Shore Taxi is a great local one.

    Malama Pono,

    Janet

Would not want to be in Kauai without a car.. . not even for a day. The Hyatt is self contained, however as the others have mentioned plenty of restaurants nearby worth a visit.

Taxis exist.. but are not even near the optimal mode of transportation on the island.

    Have a great stay.

By the time you pay for all of the taxis, you would excede the amount for a rental car. You can indeed walk to most of the places in Poipu (hubby does it all of the time). But the Beach House Restaurant may be too far from the Hyatt for a dinner walk. And there are not a lot of sidewalks available, yet. You will also miss out on a lot of the site seeing that can be done without going through a formal tour. Rent an inexpensice compact. It will be worth it!

  • Please explain Maui

I just cant seem to get my mind around Maui. We are going to Oahu first and i really get the island, but maui is confusing. Where and what are the towns? Where do people stay geographically? What is there to do besides the road to Hana?

    Thanks

    Please explain Maui

There are no cities, like Honolulu, on Maui. Mostly just small towns....often strung together. Most people land at the airport in Kahului then head across the isthmus and head north to the Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kahana, Napili, and Kapalua areas or south to Kihei and Wailea. There are loads of resort hotels and condominiums in both areas. Choosing is the hard part! :)

What is there to do?? The possibilities are endless and limited only by your own interests. If you are interested in history visit the town of Lahaina and do the walking tour. For more history visit the Iao Valley, the Halek%26#39;i-Pihana Heiau State Monument, the Sugar Museum, La Perouse Bay etc. Take a boat tour to Moloka%26#39;i and visit Kalaupapa National Historical Park.

If you love gardens visit a Lavender Farm or Botanical garden....or just gasp at the natural beauty you will see on every outing.

Beach activities abound and the beaches are beautiful! There are adventures to be had on the water, in the water and under the water...you will be spoiled for choice. How about a submarine ride, learn to surf, try windsurfing, kayak, snorkel, dive or just soak up the sun!

Do you golf? Nothing like golfing in Paradise.

Take a helicoper tour, hike, ride a horse, bike down a volcano.

Spend a day Upcountry exploring! Watch the sunrise at Haleakala, visit a winery!

Take a spa treatment, enjoy a romantic dinner or plan a picnic!

Shop in Lahaina, Paia, Wailea, Kaanapali and Makawao. There are lots of souvenirs to be had....good ones and not so good ones! There are a lot of artists and crafts people on the island as well. Visiting galleries is a lot of fun even if you don%26#39;t purchase a thing.

Nightlife might include dinner in a wonderful restaurant while watching the sun set, or a dinner cruise, or a luau, or a magic show or one of my favourites %26#39;Ulalena!

You are limited only by your budget and your imagination and there is no way you can see or do everything you want to in one visit!

Above all relax, enjoy and be happy! Let the aloha spirit find you. Maui no ka %26#39;oi!

    Please explain Maui

Thanks for asking and thanks for replying.

    Really helps me too.

Try going here: http://maps.google.com/ and putting in Maui, HI. You%26#39;ll get a very basic map.

You need to pick up a couple good travel guides and maps. We like Maui Revealed, but there are others. Look for books that focus on the islands and are not just a bunch of pages of hotel/restaurant information.

Oahu -- the bulls-eye is Honolulu, and most visitors venture from there.

On Maui - most land at Kahului and cut across the ';middle'; -- then head south or north. To the south are Kihei and Wailea; to the north Lahaina, Ka%26#39;anapali, Napili, Kapalua. (Very basically speaking.)

Maui has a vast array of water sports -- great snorkeling and amazing beaches. The boat excursions possibilities are wonderful, including catamarans. Haleakala is a dormant volcano that you will see -- can%26#39;t miss - off to the south.

If you are thinking that Maui is too ';sleepy'; -- stay towards Lahaina/Ka%26#39;anapali.

Natural wonders, sports, beaches, SHOPPING, restaurants ... you%26#39;re going to have a great time. Be prepared to be surprised. And get a window seat on your flight from Oahu.

Thank you so much for the help, i have a much better idea of maui now. The really hard question seems to be where to stay. We are on a budget, but would like a condo, and recs?

See aerial views and write-ups of condos at:

    www.wizardpub.com

I like their reports better than most TripAdvisor reviews.

Some condos are cheaper ... some are not. So consider both.

Budget would be Kehi Napili bay another great sppt check out Napili Surf Condo has studios on the water... super low key, low rise little place with a great atmosphere.... I thins a studio runs $120 a night..... dirt cheap for maui

Ther is only one small town and several little villages......and regions more people live in the hotels in honolulu than the whole population of Maui.

Maui is the best first Place in Hawaii to visit.

i agree with Mad4Maui - just too much to do. My family and I go every year (going right after Christmas so may be getting to Maui when you are leaving) and still haven%26#39;t scratched the surface.

Some stuff to add to the good suggestions already made:

    1. Before you go, spend under $10 and get a Franko%26#39;s Maui map. It%26#39;s something like $6, you can order it over the internet, and it not only is a good map of Maui, but written directly on the map is about 10 years of vacation activities, including all these places you are hearing about. I like to go through this map on the long flight to Maui - more fun than reading a guide.

    2. In addition to luaus (which cost), try a free Maui hula show. My two favorites are at Whalers Village in Kaanapali and Lahaina Center in Lahaina. I have a lot more detail on free activities at lahaina-family-vacation.com

    3. i also vote for Maui Revealed guide.

    3. Once you pick one of the two general areas to stay - west Maui (Lahaina, Kaanapali, etc) or south Maui (Kihei, etc.) - then pick luaus, beaches, restaurants, etc. Both areas have plenty of activities so that you minimize your travel time.

    Randy Willis

Try looking for condos on Napili Bay. It is a wonderful beach with a couple of restaurants within walking distance right on the beach. Depending upon your time of travel, you should be able to find a reasonably priced condo. Best of luck!!

  • Accommodations near Bay Club Waikoloa Beach Resort

I have friends staying at the Bay Club at Waikoloa Beach. I am looking for reasonable accommodations, near the Bay Club, from February 21 to March 7,2009. One non-smoking couple. Thank you

Accommodations near Bay Club Waikoloa Beach Resort

    Aloha,

You might wish to consider the Waikoloa Colony Villas or Hali%26#39;i Kai both of which are near the Bay Club.

Accommodations near Bay Club Waikoloa Beach Resort

We checked into the Bay Club on 9/30. We were staying free as a bonus for a club membership we bought a few years ago. We were given a one bdr, 2 bath unit. It was spacious, but that is the only good thing I can say. The musty smell that hit us walking in was just the start to our major disappointment. The pool conditions including the rusty shredded furniture put us over the top. We couldn%26#39;t open any curtains due to our location and our lanaii was literally 2 feet from the parking lot. We had a view of asphalt and a continual line of maintenance carts. So, we pulled up Craigs list and found 2 awesome options in the new Waikoloa Beach Villas renting through private owners. The average cost is 150-170.00 per night for a 2 bd\ 2 bath new condo with Viking BBQ%26#39;s on every private lanaii. Now we feel like we%26#39;re on vacation! We are near the pool and have only seen 2 other people there the entire week! The grounds are gorgeous and emaculate. We can walk to the Kings %26amp; Queens village for restaurants, groceries and events. You can book through Resorticahawaii.com. They have been awesome and so helpful! Or check vrbo.com for some other great condos. Don%26#39;t be afraid to dicker on the prices a little, the vacancy rate in the area is fairly high.

    New questions, breakfast in Hawi.

Thinking of driving to Hawi from Hilton Waikoloa early one morning during the week (not weekend). How far a drive is it? Is Kohala Coffee Mill a good place for breakfast or do you have other suggestions?

    Thank you so much!!

    Wendi

    New questions, breakfast in Hawi.

Only if you want a continental breakfast, and there are not many tables there. You%26#39;ll compete for the limited tables with the local diners who go for coffee every morning and linger.

Not sure if Luke%26#39;s Place at the Kohala Inn is serving breakfast. You could call them. Lots of seating there.

Nambu%26#39;s in Kapa%26#39;au sort of has breakfast, or used to. You can call them also.

The Kawaihae Harbor Grill serves breakfast daily. Their menu is online (just search for the restaurant name).

The drive to Hawi from the Hilton is roughly 45 minutes, add 5-10 minutes to Kapa%26#39;au.

If I had to pick a meal to enjoy up there, it would be lunch, lots of fun options.

    New questions, breakfast in Hawi.

We drove to Hawi and onwards to Kapa%26#39;au to the end of the road at the Polulu valley lookout, stopping at Kohala Coffee Mill for ice cream on the way back. Lovely scenery, reminding me a bit of the road to Hana in Maui with all of the single lane bridges. Once at the Lookout, save time to do the hike down to the black sand beach (1/2 hour, can%26#39;t swim, surf%26#39;s rough, bring water). then we took 250 back south to Waimea and Parker Ranch. A beautiful trip. Some choices to eat along the way, the Kohala Rainbow Cafe across from the King Hamehameha statue in Kapa%26#39;au being my favorite for wrap sandwiches. The August edition of Hawaii magazine had an article on Hawi. Also see viamagazine.com/top_stories/articles/north_k…

    Enjoy.

When we were on island in May we had planned to stop for breakfast in Kawahaei, but everything was closed. We headed on to Hawi and stopped at Kohala Coffee Mill - yes there is very limited seating, but breakfast can be put together as you wish - plated or sandwich style %26amp; was very good. We probably missed out on other options, but were happy with choice until lunch time when we were too full still and had no room for the delectable aromas that tantalized our noses. Now I have to file away the other ideas for next trip!

    hi Les!

So Tropical Dreams does serve eggs and traditional breakfast? I didn%26#39;t know. The last time I looked at their menu it was bagel shmears and pastries and sandwichees.

Your news that Kawaihae Harbor Grill was closed led me to check their website and I was see that their breakfast menu is still online but they don%26#39;t list breakfast in their hours any more.

It looks like they discontinued breakfast! Another cutback?

    __________

Kohala wraps, yes those are a good choice.

There is a newish local style eatery just before Kapa%26#39;au, called SammyD%26#39;s. He makes his own pulled kalua pork for BBQ. I remember meeting him last year at the Kohala County Fair. A taste of local style for those who want.

Hi KK - Having been such a good student of your guidance we were looking forward to Kewaihae Harbor Grill, but... was not to be. At Kohala Coffee Mill what they have is a chalkboard and they list bagels and croissants and toast - eggs, etc - there is a listing of things to add - cheese, tomatoes, bacon, etc. So we placed our order and she asked if we wanted it %26#39;plated%26#39; or sandwich? What we got was a fat croissant piled with fluffy scrambled eggs, added cheese %26amp; tomato, bacon and I requested a bag of potato chips (I like taters with my breakfast and by then my blood sugar was doing a bottom crawl). The coffee was excellent as was my Chai. As stated we were stuffed! Next trip I absolutely must have room for a meal at Kohala Rainbow Cafe.

After breakfast, keep on going to see Pololu Overlook. If you are fit, a hike down to the beach is nice. Be careful of slippery spots. Under 30m min each way. Then as a reward, have shave ice (or Tropical Dreams) at Anuenue in the shopping strip at Kawaihae--same one as the minimart and Pesto%26#39;s. Best shave ice on the west side. Really.

    yep, the Kawaihae place has the stuff like Honu Ohana says. Tropical Dreams gets all the write-up on the ice cream, but that doesn%26#39;t mean it%26#39;s better. It has more ';curb appeal.';

Hi Les, thanks for your updates about the Grill and the breakfast! Sounds good!

I wouldn%26#39;t regret Kohala Rainbow too much; it%26#39;s a decent lunch but falls into the category of ';place locals don%26#39;t go for lunch because it%26#39;s considered a bit overpriced.'; Caters to visitors. Wraps are good. Everything tastes more wonderful on vacation though, or maybe because I moved here from the Bay Area I%26#39;ve had a lot of good wraps that are similar.

Come to think of it, most restaurants had better food where I used to live than they do here. I%26#39;m not here for the dining! The Bamboo Restaurant has some dishes that are more special and you won%26#39;t find just like it anywhere else. It is still the only really good place to eat up there.

Locals are going to Sammy D%26#39;s and when I lived in Kapa%26#39;au I went to Nanbu Bakery in the historic Nanbu building, which has a pleasant courtyard behind it with tables. I did hear they have changed their offerings and prices and aren%26#39;t as popular any more. 3-4 years ago, that%26#39;s where you%26#39;d see the haole Kohalans meeting for lunch, and there is a local place across the way near the video store that was popular and cheap if you really love local style (not local style made to appeal to visitors, real local working class style).

Luke%26#39;s Place has a tropically stylish-decorated dining room and bar, in the renovated Kohala Inn, but sometimes their service is just not befitting their prices ... still, you might check it out. It%26#39;s entrance is across from the Banyan Tree area above the gas station at the main intersection in Hawi. (Akone Pule Hwy %26amp; Hawi Rd)

There%26#39;s a lot of art displayed, and with the high ceilings and many fans, and multiple French doors, it%26#39;s a pretty room.

We ate lunch at the Nanbu Bakery twice in February and it was very good both times. I thought the prices were reasonable.

We also ate once at a little place in Hawi (heading south out of town) on the left. I can%26#39;t remember the name of it but it had an art studio behind it. It was tiny with only room inside to stand and order with seating outside. We enjoyed the special of the day which was a homemade lasagna.

hey onegolden, thanks for the update on Nanbu. They had locals grumbling when they made changes and raised prices, but that%26#39;s because people don%26#39;t like such changes in their daily lunch place! Doesn%26#39;t mean they are overpriced from a visitor standpoint.

I%26#39;m trying to picture the place in Hawi where you got lasagna on the left side going south. I can%26#39;t think of anything on the mauka side of the highway other than Tropical Dreams, or an art studio. Most businesses in Hawi are on the makai side except that one block with TD.

Kapa%26#39;au, OTOH, has several galleries and businesses on the mauka side. Were you definitely in Hawi? It%26#39;s bugging me that I can%26#39;t picture it and won%26#39;t be over there for another week, lol.

Well, if my memory is correct going North it is on the right side just before Tropical Dreams. I%26#39;m pretty sure there is an art studio behind it kind of uphill.

I guess I could be completely wrong and it is Kapa%26#39;au but I thought it was Hawi. Please let me know when you go through there, it is going to bug me now.

    New Otani and beach area

We recently booked a few nights at the New Otani and I just read that the beach it is on is onsidered ';Queen%26#39;s Beach'; as it is a hangout for the gay community.

We do not have any animosity toward the gay community, but we also don%26#39;t want to hang out on a beach where we might not be wanted either.

Can anyone say whether this will be an issue?

Any other tidbits about this hotel and area would also be appreciated. On previous trips to Oahu, we have always camped on/near the North Shore

    New Otani and beach area

New Otani%26#39;s down a bit further than the gay beach area. It%26#39;s truly not a problem. It%26#39;s quite a small area and easy enough to avoid if you want to.

    New Otani and beach area

The New Otani Hotel is in a small cluster of hotels/condos that%26#39;s separated from Waikiki by roughly 1/2 mile. The beach right by the hotel is actually Sans Souci Beach, a very nice place. As the previous post said, the ';gay stretch'; of beach is a little ways away.

Your location is nice because Kapi%26#39;olani Park is your backyard and you%26#39;re away from the mayhem of Waikiki yet close enough to access it when desired. If you like fancy restaurants, there are a few of those right in your area, as well.

Sans Souci used to be a popular even famous beach area (decades ago) but the last two times I was there is was (pleasantly) empty.

I traveled with a gay friend last trip and we went to Queen%26#39;s beach every day. It%26#39;s not really near New Otani as already mentioned, it%26#39;s quite low-key for a %26#39;gay beach%26#39; and easily avoided. The days we were there you wouldn%26#39;t have even noticed unless you stopped and studied who was suntanning where.

As many others have noted, the New Otani isn%26#39;t on Queens Beach, it is on Sans Souci Beach (or Kaimana Beach, depending on who you ask).

The hotel itself is great. It is out of the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, but it is a short walk to get into the middle of it if you so choose. The New Otani is one of the few hotels in Waikiki I would stay at if the Halekulani were not available.

We have just returned from 2 nights stay at New Otani. Previously we were at the Moana Surfrider but found the noise and activity in that area anything but relaxing. It is a wee walk from the main area of Waikiki and we were a little put off by the number of homeless people and %26#39;crazies%26#39; in the park at night. Other than seeing a few gay men embracing passionately in the bars at the Kapiolani park end I would not have thought of the area as a gay hang out. The beach is not noticeably %26#39;gay%26#39; and was fantastic for swimming and had plenty of space. I really loved the New Otani except for a small issue of noise in our first room (review will be done) but that was resolved immediately by moving us up higher and around to another side. I would definitely recommend the New Otani and don%26#39;t consider the presence of gay people an issue at all. Even my husband could cope with the sight of a few men kissing and holding hands.

Two families with toddlers/ suggestions please

We - 4 adults and 2 toddlers (2 and 3 years old) are planning to visit Kauai for the first time at the end of September, beginning of October.

Since we are planning to stay in one 2 bdr apartment we need some help to choose the right location.

Even we are renting a car, we are not planning to drive to different beaches every day and since our families have very different schedules, we need to find a hotel/condo that is within a short walking distance to a nice, swimable, toddler%26#39;s suitable beach.

I have read that majority of condos are in a distance from the beach and a trail to the beach is somewhat a challenge.

What beaches other than Poipu, Anini and Lydgate are good for young kids?

Is this really true that AC is not that necessary.

… Another thought, may be with toddlers we should consider Maui instead of Kauai?

Thank you in advance for all your comments.

Two families with toddlers/ suggestions please

You can find condos on or very near the beach. I daresay all of the toddler-friendly beaches are no challenge to get to. You%26#39;ve noted some; there%26#39;s also Baby Beach in Po`ipu and Ke`e Beach all the way at the ';north'; end of the road. In Sept/Oct you could get away with staying either east, north or south for decent weather and low surf conditions. I don%26#39;t know of any condos on/near Anini, though. There are condos within walking distance to Lydgate (east), Po`ipu Beach Park (south) and a few houses on/near Baby Beach in Po`ipu.

A/C is mostly not necessary here, as the trades tend to blow fairly constantly. If you%26#39;re one of those who lives in low-temp a/c constantly you may miss it. Most places have ceiling fans, which we%26#39;ve always found more than adequate. Electricity is horrendously expensive here, which is why more owners haven%26#39;t installed a/c.

No need for Maui; Kaua`i will be perfect for you.

Two families with toddlers/ suggestions please

It can get warm the end of September but most likely a/c shouldn%26#39;t be a deal breaker.

I know you are looking for good kid friendly beaches and Hanalei Bay would still be good that time of year. Hanalei Bay Resort has a small beach at the bottom of the resort and it is a short drive to Hanalei Town. It also has a great pool with a kid%26#39;s sandy beach area. You might also consider The Westin in Princeville. It also has a wonderful kid friendly pool, but the beach is quite a walk.

Other suggested places are Wapouli Beach Resort (close to Lydgate) and renting a house in Poipu.

Have a look at Kaha Lani. Short stroll to Lydgate%26#39;s baby pool and the kids play area. Aloha Resort is even closer but very iffy on quality.

Also look at Marriot Waiohai. Very close to Brenneckes which has a shallow, safer area.

AC -- that%26#39;s a very individual consideration. It can be hot and muggy in Sept. You could also have the trades howling and no need. Now that I%26#39;m used to warm/moist, it%26#39;s much harder to evaluate that for someone else. When we%26#39;d visit from CA or Europe, I was always feeling damp. Now I%26#39;m just used to 3 showers/day.

    Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

Do you need to stay at a condo? The reason I ask is that there are quite a few vacation rentals on Ho%26#39;one Road here in the Po%26#39;ipu Beach area - just a few steps from ';Baby Beach'; -- this one for instance is directly across the narrow street from Baby Beach - literally like 6 steps away:

    kauaidiscovery.com/accommodations/…

This is a small, quiet, narrow residential street that runs along the ocean - ';Baby Beach'; here is very popular for young keiki - it isn%26#39;t very large, but is very quiet and protected. It is also a very quick drive to the keiki pool area at Po%26#39;ipu Beach Park.

One of our members here, ';Martik'; has rented on Ho%26#39;one Road for several years with her small keiki - hopefully she%26#39;ll chime in with more places to recommend there.

We have more than one ';Baby Beach'; here, but this is one here on the South Shore - we also have specific

keiki-friendly areas at Po%26#39;ipu Beach Park, Lydgate Park and Salt Pond Park. Each of these parks has a lifeguard, showers, bathrooms, etc.

As for the a/c question - you will find that it isn%26#39;t the norm here (other than hotels) - it is simply too expensive and usually not needed - IMO it very much depends on how much you rely on it on the mainland as to whether you%26#39;ll need it here.

    Good luck!

    Malama Pono,

    Janet

I would mentin the Marriott Waiohai Resort, which is right on Poipu Beach and the keiki pool there, but it is difficult to get one of the units that are not timeshare. Most of it is. But you should try.

Other than that, your best bet, IMO, for a condo close walking distance to the keiki pool at Poipu Beach County Park, is POIPU KAI RESORT. I say this with the caveat that you ask for and are willing to pay for a condo unit in the sections called Manualoha or Kahala and request a unit closest to the waterfront that you can get.

I say this because Poipu Kai is absolutely huge and you could end up in a location that requires driving to the beach. You will pay a small surcharge usually for a specific request but it%26#39;s worth it, when dealing with little ones.

Call or go online to Suite Paradise. They have most of the rentals and the better selection.

    And I should mention......KIAHUNA PLANTATION.

Kiahuna is absolutely stunning and sitting right on the ';Kiahuna Beach'; section of Poipu Beach. I would still recommend it for toddlers because at the very far east end of the beach is a calm area. I see MANY families with small children sitting there. It is somewhat protected by a natural jetty and lava rock %26#39;reef%26#39; a bit further out. It%26#39;s a small bay of sorts.

Click on this link. Click on Kiahuna Plantation. You can just barely see part of the small bay I%26#39;m referring to , right in front of bldg. 1.

    Sorry to steal this thread:

    Any advice on www.pbvacationrentals.com/turtlesnest.html?

How close to Baby beach is it? Its description says ';around the corner';. Also any ideas on whether this is in any part near where construction is going on?

I have a 4 year old, and a 20 month old and was keen to be near a beach where they can play easily...and Baby beach in poipu seems popular.

I am not planning to rent a car and such.

    Thanks

Private message Martik. She knows all the good houses in this area. Also look at Parrish rental agency.

This house says it is over a mile to Poipu Beach and it looks like it has a river running next to it. Not sure I would want a 20 month old that close to the water.

Forgot to add.... Not renting a car? You%26#39;ve got to be kidding? You absolutely need a car especially with kids. I just can%26#39;t imagine coming to Kauai and not having a car. Stores are not centrally located unless you stay at Waipouli Beach Resort and don%26#39;t want to see any other area of the island. Taxis are not convenient and they are expensive.

    Please re think that one!

%26gt;Not renting a car? You%26#39;ve got to be kidding? You absolutely need a car especially with kids

I was looking for a place with a full kitchen so we could cook mostly at home..and hopefully have to get things mostly once. We are planning to be there 6 days...and mainly don%26#39;t plan to roam around at all.

Does that change your recommendation at all?

    Thanks

    USS Arizona Memorial - Help?

Can someone tell me if 11am is too late to get to see the memorial. Will there still be tickets available at this time?. We plan to go on the 28th of September which is a Sunday.

    USS Arizona Memorial - Help?

Possibly, but I sincerely doubt it. Was certainly not an issue when we visited in late July. Tourist travel is down 22%. There are no guarantees of course since there are a finite number of tickets daily. I%26#39;d try to get there earlier.

    USS Arizona Memorial - Help?

There will probably be tickets available at 11am. Try to get there as early as you can to make sure you get tickets.

Visitor numbers to Oahu are not down as much as the other islands.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

I just posted my trip experience. We reached there at 2:10pm and got into the 2:20p group. There is always the risk of tickets selling out... The person renting out the audio tour said that the numbers were really low lately but then we were there on a Tuesday. Maybe Sundays are more busy.

littlehelp .... agree with Dusty, get there as soon as you can to pick up your first come, first ticket issued.

Along with Hazel, I too went to the USS Arizona in the afternoon, approx. 1 pm to be exact and we got three tickets for the shuttle one hour later.

Numbers are down, but, in-as-much-as the certain days you will have more than the other days, you never know how many visitors will visit the USS Arizona on different days. Sunday should be a good day and although you are at the ending of the Aloha Festivites held during the month of September, I am sure you will have no problems with USS Arizona shuttle tickets. I also believe that the Molokai to Oahu canoe crossing is that day, so tourist will be on the beach catching the ';action';.

    Good luck,

We went on 5 Sept which happened to be the anniversary of signing of the peace treaty for the end of WWII. We didn%26#39;t know there was a planned event at the Missouri next door until we saw it on the morning news. Our shuttle dropped us off at 9.30am and instead of the crowds of people we expected, we managed to walk right in. Our trip was called at 10.15am. I suggest you go a little earlier than 11am but not as early as 7am as some people had suggested to us. That is when all the tour buses arrive.

do you get hp sauce in maui

    hp sauce

got no idea and had none as to what it was until i googled it

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP_Sauce

    hp sauce

Haven%26#39;t been to Maui yet (going next month for the first time), but I am a fan of HP sauce (at breakfast with bacon, sausages, etc.). While it is frequently available as a condiment in restaurants here in Canada, I have rarely seen it while travelling through the continental USA. A-1 Sauce is the closest thing offered in US restaurants; and that really isn%26#39;t very close at all. I will be very surprised if I see it in Maui.

    No worries.

I bought it at Safeway for my son, when we were there a couple of weeks ago. But it was very expensive, $6.99 for a regular bottle.

I still have no idea what it is, but you%26#39;ve just got to read a post by someone named ';wormsinmyhead';.

    :)

Does that sauce kill them ';worms';? If not, then why the heck are you buying it?

It is a steak sauce. I grew up with it because my British father loved it. We had it on steak, meat pies and with breakfast ham or sausages. My son loves it.

I saw several pink speedo%26#39;s at the beach in front of the Muai Prince Sunday, August 15. Were you competing in a swim race?

Oh so sorry VT! I stayed at the Maui Prince, but it was back in May 2008.

Do me a favor and report them ';imitation Caddies';. :(

BTW, are you guys saying that sauce is just on Maui?

No you can find Hp sauce all over Canada, in every grocery store. We could not find it in Florida.

I since read about it and it is of British origin.

I will have to post the picture I took of the pink speedos.

    advice needed please

We have been considering Hawaii for my 50th birthday in April. Well thats a lie actually, we have been considering Hawaii as a holiday destination for the past 3 years!!As it is a ';big'; birthday, i want it to be special and am hoping to ';push the boat out'; a little this time. We are from Scotland so will mean a long time travelling, so want to keep the travel to a minimum if we can. As it is such a long journey, where would you recommend stopping off at for a couple of days? We are not even sure whether we want to stay in Oahu or go to Maui maybe even Kauai. How long is the flights to the other Islands from Oahu? Would you recommend going to one of the smaller islands or would Oahu be fine for our first visit? I prefer resorts which are not too large and not too busy. I know this is probably difficult to find in Hawaii as they all sem to be very large resorts. I was also wanting 5 star as it is a special occasion. I would prefer to be on the beach and love to have a large balcony(Lanai) to sit out on and look at the beautiful sunsets. being in Scotland, we hardly get any sun so really love the sun on holiday. If we go at the beginning of April, what is the weather likely to be lke?

Sorry for all these questions but would really appreciate any help and if anyone from the UK has been recently, it would be really great to get dvice on the flights etc. I would really appreciate any recommendations for hotels or as I want to stay in a hotel that is not too busy, would you maybe recommend renting out a villa on the beach?

Any info/advice would be really appreciated.

    Cheers,

    advice needed please

please search these topics..as they are answered weekly. See How to avoid jet Lag.... Flying from London.... Interisland flights....

Use the menu on the left for acitvites, hotels, nsidertips for each island. It takes about 2 to 4 hours each way to fly between one island an another. and costs 100 to 150 pp each way

Each island is total different than each other.

Maui and Big Island will have best weather

    advice needed please

Actual flying time from Honolulu to the neighbor islands is about 30min. You can get flights earlier in the day and later evening hours starting at $64 one way. If you have at least 10 days, try 2 islands. If less than that, pick 1. Maui and Oahu have the largest selection of resorts. From budget, family friendly to more quiet and ritzy. If seclusion is what you are looking for try either Kauai or best yet, Lanai. Very small and rural islands and yet have the resort type you are looking for. April is one of my favorite times of year in Hawaii. Usually the winter storms are gone and not as hot as the summer months. It is also a ';down time'; in the islands and you will find them less crowded. Do some research on your own, such as Hawaii for Dummies,(please don%26#39;t be offended, I own it)! and come back to get more specific. Also let us know if you are interested in any activities, as they are different on different islands!!

Oh my! A big %26#39;Hawaii Five-O';! This is going to be fun.

It would help us to know how long you can visit and budget. (You%26#39;ve helped with saying you%26#39;d like beachfront and quiet resorts, and we know you%26#39;re coming in April -- which is fine almost everywhere in the islands.)

It is a long haul of a flight. If you have time to stay overnight for two nights, consider breaking the trip in San Francisco, which is an interesting city itself. You can also connect on to Hawaii from Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Dallas, Las Vegas, etc. -- even Chicago, although I can%26#39;t guarantee good weather in my city in April. Once you decide on islands the flight plan may be determined by whether you can fly from City A direct to Island #1, and return direct from Island #2, for instance.

I don%26#39;t advise a one-night stop-over because IMO it merely prolongs the agony to collect luggage, leave for an airport hotel, check in, eat, check out, go back through airport security, etc. Two nights seems worthwhile -- IF you want to see something of another mainland city. Homebound, I%26#39;d probably just continue on through without a city stop-over.

I don%26#39;t think you want Oahu. Honolulu is a big city. Waikiki is aswarm with people night and day. The north shore is very isolated.

I think you would enjoy Maui, Kauai and/or Lanai. Maui has the largest choice of lodgings and restaurants outside of Honolulu, but resorts can be quiet and private. Kauai is even quieter than Maui, but has fewer choices of hotels and restaurants -- maybe the Hyatt on Poipu would suit. Lanai -- well, on Lanai you%26#39;d be at the Four Seasons; there%26#39;s not much else there -- *very* quiet. (Maui also has a Four Seasons -- and a Fairmont, and a Ritz.) There are also lovely beachfront condos on Maui and Kauai.

As Dan has said, browse the posts on the forum for more information and inquire about specific properties.

Here%26#39;s a little traveler quiz to help you choose islands:

    鈥bout.com/od/鈥sland_scores.htm

while in the air times vairies between 20 to 40 min, My 2 -4 hours is the time needed to return a car, check in, go throught security, get luggage, get another car. Many flights are not direct and you must lay over to catch another flight in Honolulu.

there is a $25 sur charge to buy a same day ticket at the airport.

I agree with Sue - a two night layover would be fun ... coming or going. Las Vegas is popular, as is San Franciso. I would avoid LA ...

There are other great places for layovers on the West Coast. Portland, Oregon is BEAUTIFUL! San Diego is also fun. And we%26#39;ll alway welcome you in Sacramento, of course.

At the risk of stating the obvious, you need a couple good guide books and maps. Hawaii for Dummies is popular, but there are others ... just find one that focuses on the islands instead of pages of filler on hotels/restaurants.

Figure how many nights you will be in Hawaii. If 9 nights or longer, you can see two islands.

Also figure your nightly acommodations budget (dollars).

A few things: On Oahu, you can do without a car, but you surely will need one for Maui, Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii. Oahu has an excellent public transportation system and you can get excursions to the east/north sides of the island. Most resorts are on Waikiki, and it is a busy area.

On Maui there are several nice resorts, and personally, just because they are large ... it doesn%26#39;t mean that they are crowded. You can have the five star and still have your space at a resort.

One more thing. April 12 is Easter. The week before and after Easter brings LOTS of families to Hawaii, because the kids get time off. Personally, I would wait until later in the month to visit. And don%26#39;t worry a snap about the weather. Warm and lovely.

If you want a sunny stopover San Diego might be a good choice. Beautiful weather, right on the ocean, nice, manageable city with a beautiful park and several museums.

As for which island, I suggest you get a good overall guide book like ';Hawai`i for Dummies'; (any online or local large book store should have it) and do a bit of reading. Then you can come back here and ask more questions on specific forums.

I%26#39;m very biased, but I would recommend that you visit Lana%26#39;i. You can stay at the Four Seasons Manele Bay (beach). If you want to stray for a day, take the ferry over to Maui for some shopping %26amp; activities. Based on what you prefer (resorts which are not large or busy, large balcony, beautiful sunsets) -- you can get all that and more on Lana%26#39;i. Check out the Lana%26#39;i forums for more info.

If you plan to rent a car, then Maui would be a good choice.

If you do not plan to rent a car, Oahu is the only island that has reasonable public transportation available to tour the island.

Away from Honolulu, Oahu is rural like the other islands.

Lots of info including sites with free brochures for all islands:

    to Snorkel Bob or not......

Apparantly there is one person here on the forums who has had a bad experience with Snorkel Bob%26#39;s. That is really unfortunate. Happens to the best of us. Sometimes a place has an off day.

To post on every snorkeling post how bad it was is getting very old. I see no other posts have been done, not even a trip report.

Take this with a grain of salt people.

Snorkel Bob%26#39;s has a great reputation around all islands. He has personally been instrumental in not only donating a hugh sum of money for ocean awareness and etiquette but also volunteering his personal time. He spends a lot of time with the keiki of our islands. To condemn him for one bad experience is just plain WRONG. I don%26#39;t care if you or your family or friends never rent from him again. There are plenty of other people who will, due to his great reputation and CARING!!

    to Snorkel Bob or not......

Thank you MsFuzz for this post.

We will continue to rent from his shops, because we have good service for 12 years. Only once did we not have A 1 service, just average.

    to Snorkel Bob or not......

Thanks, Ms Fuzz. For all we know the original and/or subsequent bad posts were written by his competition. Thus is the down-side of TA.

Thanks. I think I will give them a try.

No worries, Msfuzz. All of his complaint posts have been removed. ;-)

I always bring my own snorkel gear, but you know, I think I will give Snorkel Bob%26#39;s a try. Think I might tell all my friends that go to Hawaii the same thing.

Looks like his posts are going to have the opposite effect.

Last time I was in Maui, I went out with Snorkel Bob and had no problems. He tends to try to feed the fish too much and get a little too close to my person while snorkeling, but otherwise, he seemed like an OK fella to me.

I hear many people have been out with Snorkel Bob and have had pleasant experiences. I%26#39;d say that%26#39;s the majority opinion.

Hey bullet, maybe Snorkel Bob just felt you were not his type? Seriously, bullet since Snorkel Bob is ';iconic'; in Maui, he just probably tries to please way too many snorkelers.

Old Snorkel Bob has been OK to me.

I, too, had a bad experience with Snorkel Bob%26#39;s--on Kauai. The ';deluxe'; ($35 per week) snorkel mask I rented was damaged. I didn%26#39;t realize it when I tried it on in the store because I didn%26#39;t know exactly how a snorkel worked at that point. Snorkel Bob%26#39;s was a long way from where I was staying in Hanalei and I had to rent a mask from someone else for a few days. When I finally was able to get back to the middle of the island to Snorkel Bob%26#39;s, they gave me a replacement mask. Guess what? It was broken too! (For $35 per week?) Sure, found that too late again. They credited me for the $3 per day I had to pay to rent a mask from someone else, but really weren%26#39;t particularly apologetic for my trouble. I felt like just another haole who had bought the hype of the ads and the good snorkel bob...Why does snorkel Bob have a foundation? Because he has made so much money off of people like me.

Hi, Thinking of staying here for 4 nights. Has the hotel a pool? The rooms look good, but I cannot see where there is a pool. Can anyone help? Thanks RSA

Stay next door at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel...

    Difference of night and day.

I%26#39;ve stayed there once. Be careful of being fooled by the photos. Since each room is actually owned by an individual, they vary greatly in their design. The photos show only those that an owner has remodeled recently.

Parking is also not usually on site. The parking I reserved was actually 2 blocks away at a condo without attendants. I never had an issue, but someone else with a reserved spot lost thiers and had a hard time getting anyone to help with the situation.

Right next door with a much much bigger pool which gets LOTS of sun from early to sunset is the Park Shore Waikiki (now managed by Aqua Hotels) which you can book direct - but may get cheaper discount rates on Orbitz if you look at the promo codes. All the hotels on the strip are similar age. The Waikiki Grand pool is shaded much of he day...look at Google Earth and you will see that also check pics of the hotel. We have booked the Park Shore for our upcoming trip but have not stayed before there but the location. The Queen Kap was also mentioned and is also a good choice...for budget hotels on the beach (South end).

Can anyone direct me to the best and safest parasailing company on Oahu? I have seen X-treme and Toms Barefoot websites but would love some hands on knowledge and insite if possible....We leave on Oct 18th and would love to do this but alittle sceptical of experience and competance....Thanks for all the replies in advance!!!

Thanks Fujisdad, does that meen you used them as I found the websit but wanted to have some hands on info....could you tell me what you thought about the trip you took with them? I did see the other posts in that forum that were quite informative so thank you for the direction!!!

    hyatt or sheraton in maui

which one do you think would be better in may for our honeymoon. we like to do a lot of things and def like night life

    hyatt or sheraton in maui

For lots of things to do ... and night life choose... EITHER! OK, that was not the answer you were looking for, but it will make sense to you once you arrive. Sheraton Maui is on one end of Ka%26#39;anapali Beach (south of Black Rock) and the Hyatt is on the other. Whaler%26#39;s Village is in the middle of that stretch of beach and easily acccessible via the beach walkway.

We far prefer the Sheraton. It%26#39;s quiet at night. Lowish buildings strung along a grassy area right on the beach. Great rooms, 2-island views, great food -- wonderful pool with pool bars that have great food as well. Gracious and spread out. Ahh ... can%26#39;t wait until December.

Hyatt ... large. Beach not as good as the Sheraton. Large building with stores and such in them. Kinda cavernous. Not as open air as the Sheraton. Lots of conferences/conventions. Still, very popular.

    hyatt or sheraton in maui

thanx BLBL that was just what i was looking for in an answer. we were leaning toward sheraton. just on question what is 2 island view?

yep - definitely agree with the above - the Sheraton for a honeymoon - right in front of Black Rock for great snorkeling, and a short 5-7 min stroll down the beach sidewalk to shopping and restaurants - congrats and have a great time!

You can see Molokai from some rooms and Lanai from others. There is a great open area at the top of the buildings on Black Rock where you can see both.

Try to get an ocean front room.

    thanx guys i def will

  • ATV Tour - Kualoa Ranch, O'ahu - VS - ATV Tour in Kauai

I%26#39;m due to travel Hawaii in 2 weeks. I was debating whether to book in for the ATV tour at Kualoa Ranch in O%26#39;ahu, or wait til a visit Kauai and do one there just days later. Just wanted to know which was perhaps better than the other....

ATV Tour - Kualoa Ranch, O'ahu - VS - ATV Tour in Kauai

In addition to this question, I wanted to know is anybody has the names of companies running this in Kauai?

ATV Tour - Kualoa Ranch, O'ahu - VS - ATV Tour in Kauai

We have done the Kipu Ranch ATV trip on Kauai and it was fun. You get to see where various movies were filmed. The only thing that I recommend is to bring clothes that you don%26#39;t mind getting red dirt on as it does not wash out completely.

    Enjoy your trip!

    Here%26#39;s a website:

    www.hawaiiactivityworld.com/kauai/atv_tours/

    Sounds awesome - thanks guys.

I%26#39;m wondering if we do the tour that requires bringing swimming gear, if the water would be too deep for my partner to go in (Who cannot swim)?

Or if it would be best to stick to the tour that stays on dry land

Bump for the original question - I too now have a choice of doing the ATV tour either in Kauai (I would pick Kipu ranch) or in Oahu at Kualoa Ranch (cheaper). Don%26#39;t want to do an ATV on both islands...anyone have an recommendation of which ATV tour if you could only do one? Thanks!

Lava Update - Sept 5 2008 (Must Read!!!)

Exciting news!!! Lava has been spotted within the Halema%26#39;uma%26#39;u Vent at the Hawaii Volcanes National Park.

I am now going to see the nightime viewing conditions and will have another update soon.

In the meantime check out this link for video and description of this historic event:

Lava Update - Sept 5 2008 (Must Read!!!)

I think I%26#39;m going to cry. Maybe I can fly back next week.

Hope it%26#39;s spectacular, on behalf of lava lovers everywhere.

Lava Update - Sept 5 2008 (Must Read!!!)

I skimmed the press release since it%26#39;s really late here and I need to go to bed.

It sounds like it can only be viewed by helicopter or plane since it%26#39;s within the crater and not ';shooting'; out. Did I read it correctly?

    Great news. Thank you.

(and only 6 days until I get to the island)

Well, this morning I was able to look at the webcam of Halema%26#39;uma%26#39;u Vent. Wow! You can definately see the lava ';shooting'; up into the air.

If this is still going on around the 20th of September where would the best place to see it be?

At approximately 2130 Hawaiian Time on the evening of Sept 5th there was no lava visible from the Jagger Museum. There was however a spectacular glow occassionally illuminating the entire Halema%26#39;uma%26#39;u Crater. The brightness of the glow was variable throughout the night. Around 2210 the glow completely went away and the view turned into darkness. By 2213 the glow returned and once again began its fluctuating pattern. A possible explanation for the period of darkness is the lava pond on the interior overturning.

By 0545 on Sept 6th was the best viewing. The morning light came in and showed a fantastic panaramic view of the Kilauea Caldera and the new crater within Halema%26#39;uma%26#39;u continuing its show with its fluctuating red glow.

There is currently lava within the crater, but it is only visible by helicoptor or from the rim of Halema%26#39;uma%26#39;u. No access is allowed onto the rim.

To see a more detailed update visit the USGS website update here: http://volcano.wr.usgs.gov/kilaueastatus.php

This is truly exciting! Your post was the thing that sent me to check the updates ... I usually do it every day but I hadn%26#39;t. I have to go up to Volcano House tomorrow. Do you have any idea if it%26#39;s a zoo up there right now?

I was thinking about going before sunset.

I am NOT a 5:45 am person, lol, not even for Madame Pele.

(I%26#39;d have to get up at 4 am)

Lavaguyd, do your posts about the lava flow generate business for your tour company ?

Found this safety guide on the county web site

    http://lavainfo.us/KalapanaSafetyInsert.pdf

Useful info for land or water viewing--see the picture of bench collapse!

KamaainaK, I cant honestly say how crowded it will be, but I can imagine that there will be a bit more activity with the new excitement, especially at the Jagger Museum. When I got to there around 2130 on Sept 5 there were only 3 cars in the parking area. This was before the news made it into the morning paper. I would expect large crowds around sunset today.

If you want to get away from the crowds I would go later. By 10pm it usually gets pretty quiet, even though when I went on the 5th there was a very loud and obnoxious group of teens that showed up around 11pm and stayed for about 30 minutes. Personally I like the early morning b/c very few people even try to make the effort to get up, which means no crowds. When there are no crowds or people talking you have a better chance of hearing small explosions coming from the crater. Plus the view really is much better before sunrise...

RustyHarpoon, I just started contributing posts on TripAdvisor recently. The main intention is to come and share information, help others, and learn from the experts such as KamaainaK, Hawaiidan, and those who contribute on a regular basis. Even though I have not gotten any business as a result it doesnt mean im not hoping for it!

Not everybody can afford to take a tour, especially since a vacation to Hawaii can be so expensive. If the airline tickets dont take a big chomp out of your budget, then the food, or sometimes the lodging will. For a lot of people this is a once in a lifetime experience, and often it is with a limited budget. What it is about is making sure people dont spend their money unwisely or waste their time doing things that dont fit them, especially if this is their only time to ever be in this incredible place. My services are not for those coming here on a budget, but my contributions here may help them create lifelong memories and make their researching process a bit easier.

    Hurricane Coverage for Timeshare

    Hi all

For the past two years i%26#39;ve been on tripadvisor i%26#39;ve posted and spoken to many a timeshare or vacation owner. What type of coverage do you have if a hurricane wipes out your resort. Are you out your timeshare?Being that you own a week and have trade posibilities are you out of luck on your trade if a hurricane ruins your vacation.I know Maui is a real longshot on this but.....

    thoughts?

    Hurricane Coverage for Timeshare

We can purchase trip insurance for natural disaster and illness about $49 per the week you reserve.

Some resorts will let you reschedule even if you don%26#39;t have trip ins.That%26#39;s what happened with our friends who are on the east coast.Their resort was

';closed'; for two years so they got their weeks and extra bonus weeks banked with RCI. can%26#39;t remember if they had to pay to withdraw from the bank or not.

Great question..I%26#39;m going to check our by-laws and whatever and find out about our Maui resort.

    Hurricane Coverage for Timeshare

    Would travelguard cover a timeshare?

No.... you dont have anything to insure. You are not a property owner, you are a points owner. Its like insuring your purchase of a stock or bond.

In time shares you no longer purchase a piece of a building... you buy ';points'; which are worth only what you will pay for them and have no real value.

You dont own anything... If the physical property were sold, you would have little recourse. Talk to your Lawyer or Accountant... and weep.

All financed private homes and condos in Hawaii are required by their loans to carry Hurricane insurance and built with building codes that have hurricane features.

Private homes are one thing but what about the resort in hawaii you just traded for?

traded what????....its all points...which are not worth anything ,only to you.

The resorts own insurance... but you have no legal stake in said resort. They have no liabilty to you whatsoever. You have no legal position for a claim. This is why timeshare are such lousy deals.

Example....when Mauna Kea closed due to an earthquake

they canceled existing reservations.... and future ones. Nobody got financial compensation except the owners of the property. Guests would need travel insurance to protect them.

Dan, there are two general types of time share interests in Hawaii:

    1. ';Time share ownership plan'; where the buyer has a defined ownership interest in and right to use the real property.

    2. ';Time share use plan'; where the buyer gets a right to use a designated facility for a ';specific or discernable period by temporal division';, but not an ownership interest in the property.

For years, after cleaning up the corrupt industry in the early 80s, ';ownership'; was the only allowable option in the islands in order to protect the purchasers. But when giants like Trendwest/Wyndham, Hilton, Marriott and others starting pushing their agendas, the ';use'; concept was permitted.

The ownership of the TS ';use plan'; units are to be held in a trust which ';insures'; their being able to fulfill their contracts even if the plan fails. Righhhhht, wait until one goes under and see what they end up with (10% off coupons to buy in the plan taking its place).

Nowadays the new development market does seem to be ';use/points'; driven, but there are still some new plans around who sell ';ownerships';.

As to the OPs question on hurricane insurance, most new commercial constructions in Hawaii are designed to survive multi-century events, and since there are insurers (and reinsurers, which all companies offering policies in Hawaii utilize), any condo and/or time share project should carry a policy with the costs passed on to the ';owners';.

If not, vote for new association boardmembers at the next condo election.

Dan Dan Dan, that is most definetely Maui TA stink eye. Right now you are leading and Caddy might be handing you a nice bomdigity travel cert as your prize come December.

Thanks Amberloo for setting the record straight. We have had fee simple owernship with a registered deed for 14 years. I%26#39;ve never bought points. Would sit through a presentation and think..something is not right.

Dan, when I present you with the award in December, please try not to rudely snatch it out of my hand.

I%26#39;ll wear my pink speedo for you provided you don%26#39;t complain. (Wink: Dan!)

That would be a great challange, and loads of fun and exercise.

Just as a suggestion, since we have not heard about this until now....

Betcha you could get exact info, or at least, who to contact that is sponsoring the bike race, by calling the local bike rental folks.

    Kauai Cylce: 808-821-2115

    Outfitters: 742-7421

    peddle and paddle: 826-9069

Will also keep an ear and eye out for you, so if I do find out anything, can let you know.

We get all kinds of flyers for events posted at the gym.

We haved hiked the power line trail from both ends, but not all the way one way. July would be a great month and pretty dry.

I would think they would start at the arboretum at the end of kuamoo road, and end up with a down hill ride that winds up on the north shore, not far from the princeville airport. WAG on my part, just seems sensible.

What a great idea for a bike race. Sorely needed on this island.

And of course a fun awards presentation party at the end.

Mountain Bike Race along Power Line Trail, July 4th?

Thanks, Denny. I think we are pretty far out. I found information on the PARADISE RIDE KAUAI ~ AUGUST 9 - 10, 2008 but that was more of a long distance club ride (55 miles each day) Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    The 4th of July bicycle ride up Powerline Trail is also a yearly event - I found this info online about it: ';The powerline race is usually @ 9:00 am, but that%26#39;s subject to change. Contact John @ The Bike Doktor in Hanalei for more info closer to the race day';

  • Help! No Insurance if Canadian on Hawaiian ?

    Hi

I was in the process of booking on the Hawaiian Airlines site and almost finished and tried to buy the cancellation insurance but it%26#39;s only for U.S. citizens. Any ideas how to get cancellation insurance at the same time as booking? I could book through Expedia but its more expensive. Help please, the fares have already increased since yesterday.

    Thanks,

    Karen.

Help! No Insurance if Canadian on Hawaiian ?

you dont need insurance....unless you are in poor health.. Hawaiian is a strong airline...its not going away.

Forget the insurance... I have never bought it and never needed it.... What are your worries that you would insure ???

Help! No Insurance if Canadian on Hawaiian ?

    Don%26#39;t have any advice...

But I love White Rock!! Nothing like a cold one in a pub overlooking the beach.

If you really want insurance, buy it for your whole package (if you like) through Travel Guard/AIG. They have lots and lots of options. And if you buy close to the time you book your flight, it should cost you less. We use them for cruise coverage.

check out www.insuremytrip.com and see if it covers canadians -- you can pick exactly what you need

Immed after booking our flights we buy Trip Cancellation/Interuption/Baggage through Canadian Direct Insurance.

    www.travelunderwriters.com

For a family of 5 for 17 days (includes an overnighter in Seattle each way) it was $190.00.

I believe you have to buy this with in so many days of booking your trip.

I buy our medical (a year plan for the family for those day trips across the line) through Pacific Blue Cross and than add some days when our trips go over 14 days.

We always buy insurance. especially with traveling with our kids.

    Hi

Thanks for your advice again. I was a bit stressed because I thought you had to buy trip cancellation insurance at the time of booking. I always buy this coverage ( in case we have to cancel, not the airline ) At one time one had to buy that coverage within hours of purchasing. Obviously, times have changed and I didn%26#39;t know because I%26#39;ve always bought it at time of purchase.

Is it true to wait closer to departure to buy insurance for better premiums.

    Thanks again everyone

    Bellini

    bellini

    Is it true to wait closer to departure to buy insurance for better premiums.';';';';';

dont think insurance premiums work the same was as car rental prices -- cant imagine them going down the closer you get to departure

Bellini -- Let%26#39;s see if I can express this well...

The insurance companies want you to buy insurance close to the time you book your trip because ... the later you wait, they assume that you are anticipating more risk. Like you have discovered something that makes you think you%26#39;ll need it. No way is the price going down closer to the trip.

We have always bought it the same day as booking. My Dh thinks there is aa time limit to buy it, with in 2 weeks of purchase.

Vancouver - you may be right in some situations. In others, like cruises -- you can book later, but it costs you more. My problem is: if I change my mind about the cruise, up to a point, I can get my money back. But you don%26#39;t get money back from the insurance.

BTW -- will be in your neck of the woods in a few weeks. Can%26#39;t wait. Getting tired of 100+ degree weather.

Aloha, my husband and I have stayed at the Waikiki Wave but not the others. Our first stay was Sept 2007. We enjoyed the Wave. We%26#39;re in our mid-thirties. We%26#39;re budget minded travellers and we found the Wave to be clean, comfortable, and well appointed. The rooms are recently refurbished and the front desk staff are very helpful. It%26#39;s only a 1/2 block from the beach. The parking situation is not ideal but we always managed to find a spot for our rental in their lot. We%26#39;re staying there again in January 09. We think it%26#39;s great value for the money.

Good luck with your search. Happy trip planning.

which hotel would you choose out of these...

I can only comment on the Sheraton Princess...

Across the street from the beach, kind of in the middle of the hotel/shopping strip.

I found it clean, and with only the king bed in the room, plenty of space.

We went to the pool 1 afternoon, plenty of chairs to use. We enjoyed the poolside bar.

We did walk down to the Pacific Beach for the Oceanarium Restaurant. I wasn%26#39;t impressed with the buffet, we did breakfast there for $30, with a coupon. It seemed clean enough, I did use the lobby restroom.

    Have a great time,

    Mel

    Sheraton Princess Kaiulani.

I would vote for the Ohana Beachcomber or the Pacific Beach. Have always enjoyed the rooms at the Pacific Beach as well as the breakfast buffet at the Oceanarium Restarant.

The Ohana Beachcomber rooms were renovated recently and are nicely done.

The problem with the Princess Kaiulani is that it is a Sheraton and the rooms do not reflect that. Oh sure, the lobby, pool, restaurants, etc are impressive, but the rooms are dated. So, if expecting ';Sheraton'; then you may be disappointed.

    Aloha

thank you for the information, i think i will keep an eye on the hotels and book one that is offering best rate. thanks.

We stayed at the Pacific Beach. We booked it thru Great Hawaii Vacations, better rate than direct and requested an Oceanfront room, which we got. You can see Waikiki beach from the balconies and was nice sitting out there at sunset and watching the world go by.

Pacific Beach-make sure and ask for beach tower. Beachcomber is in the middle of everything but is under construction and is a little too loud. Pacific Beach is further down Waikiki but not too far. Walk out the front door, across the street and you%26#39;re beachfront. I hear you need to be careful with the Sheraton PK rooms. Never stayed at the Wave. Good luck.

I also vote Pacific Beach, have stayed there 6 times over the past 7 years. Great size rooms, clean and comfortable. We like the Beach tower oceanfront rooms which you can get for about $199-$220 on the hotel website ';hot deals'; which is a great rate for oceanfront views along Kalakaua Ave. Hotel in great location, easy walk to shops, restaurants %26amp; public transport. ABC shop in lobby and beach right across the street.

I%26#39;ve only stayed at the Waikiki Outrigger. But if I couldn%26#39;t stay there, I have often thought I%26#39;d probably stay at the Pacific Beach. I%26#39;ve been inside, but not to the rooms. Very good location.

Not familiar with the Wave, but all of the others...I think you%26#39;ll do fine.

Check the Outrigger Waikiki on the beach. Check their rates for Travel Clubs. You can usually get an Entertainment Card rate for a city view room that is affordable. We paid $185/night in August for that. If it%26#39;s only $25 a night more than the ones you listed, it would be worth it. The Outrigger is so convenient to everything!

    which hotel?

I have booked a partial oceanview room at sheraton Waikiki because I still haven%26#39;t had a quote from the outrigger reef on the beach. If I can get a full ocean view at the outrigger for a similar price, which hotel would be better. We are a family of 2 adults with a special needs 19 year old son. Thanks :)

if tourism down, why no discounts

I keep repeatedly hearing about how badly Hawaii (and other tourist sites) are hating it because of slow economy, low amount of travelers, etc. Even condo owner we are renting from next week says he%26#39;s out there this week and how slow everything is, yet, when I check on activities, flying, snorklying, etc, no one seems to trying to make any deals. What gives?

if tourism down, why no discounts

We are traveling in early December. I have already re-booked our car and one hotel at significantly lower prices.

if tourism down, why no discounts

';Significantly lower prices '; than what?

BLBL, tell us the hotel and car rental details and rates and there are many people here who will tell you if you got a good deal.

There are discounts..Pacific Whale Foundation is offering 50% off on nearly all activities for members on weekends.

Needed an extra night before condo. Maui Coast.. usually 200 plus was 109.00 cheapest price we have had from them for about 8 years. We stay here when we fly in a day or two early.

its the problem of the cost of doing business...it keeps going up. There comes a point where to discount , faced with rising costs, means going out of business..... ask Aloha and ATA...

Hotels on the Big Island, Hilton, Marriott Castle, have an offer....stay for a week get $450 in credit for airline fare...

Activites like snorkeling, flying all use fuel, are not multi-million dollar companies.. they just limit the trips the make till they get a full loaf..rather than make lots of little discount trips.

United has a fare sale good till Nov 19. no saturday travel .

face the fact that prices may come down a little but will never go back to what the were 2 3 or 4 years ago.....

compared to what you get for your dollar now... with less visitors, you are getting a huge value less people and a better experience overall...

I don%26#39;t know, I probably have a funny way of looking at certain things but if you can get a good deal on a car and a condo or hotel, I think I%26#39;d draw the line at that and call it good. I wouldn%26#39;t even wonder why the cost of activities are not generally discounted. People have to make some money, right? The way I look at it, activities are optional, unlike a place to stay or a car to drive.

Honestly, I think people have a good idea of what activities they want to do before they get there and a discount might make it a little sweeter but would it really make someone who wasn%26#39;t going to go parasailing or take a helicopter ride, go parasailing or take a helicopter ride? I don%26#39;t know....

Bud, dear ... I don%26#39;t need you to tell me if I got a good deal.

    touche! :)

There might not be as many discounts on activities, but there are discounts at hotels. Here in Kauai the average daily rate is a lot less then it was last year- in fact the hotel that I work at is down almost $15. While that might not seem like a lot, its huge. As others have said, the prices of car rentals are also declining...
