Merriman's Kapalua - anyone been yet?

Peter Merriman, long considered one of the finest chefs on the Big Island, if not the best, was slated to open a Kapalua outpost on June 12, 2008. Anyone been yet? Would love to hear of your dining experience.

Merriman's Kapalua - anyone been yet?

I, too, am curious if anyone has been and can share their dining experience. I have reservations for July 3rd and know that they did open on June 12th because they called last week to confirm my reservation.

Merriman's Kapalua - anyone been yet?

I%26#39;m glad to know there is now a Merriman%26#39;s in Kapalua. Years ago my husband and I ate at the Waimea location and had a wonderful dinner. I still remember the coconut creme brulee.

Great news for diners - another good restuarant in West Maui is welcome!

But not such great news for vacationers staying on Puna Point. For the past couple of years since the old Bay Club closed, staying out at the end of Puna Point (part of Napili Kai complex) has been a wonderful haven of quiet. Nothing but you and the sounds of the surf. It is definitely a great site for a restaurant, but I confess that I was hoping the Kapalua company would put something else in there that would be a bit less noisy. If you are staying in PunaII, know that the restaurant is only 20 feet or so on the other side of the wall and the noise (and smells) from the kitchen and the restuarant are not exaclty the peaceful sounds of paradise. We experienced that a few years back with the old Bay Club and finally gave up after a couple of nights and asked to be moved.

Aloha VC,

Very interesting thought about the food smells...I remember someone who was staying in The Whaler in the south building overlooking the restaurants commenting on how unpleasant it was, in fact so much so that they couldn%26#39;t use their lanai. I wonder if they have a plan to filter the cooking smells so they won%26#39;t be a problem. I%26#39;ll try to find out and post the answer.

SBBG - was in our neck of the woods last night for a show at the Granada. Left at intermission - it was wretched. What was happening on State Street? I thought Fiesta was later in the summer.

We stayed in the very end unit in Puna II a number of years ago. Part of the problem was that the Bay Club also ran a show every night. But you could hear the kitchen workers coming out back for a break and emptying the trash all night and the clanking of washing dishes. We could even smell their cigarette smoke wafting over the hedge. It was not pleasant. Hopefully the managment at Napili Kai have worked something out with the new restaurant tenents to mitgate this.

Aloha VC,

Hey, it was Solstice Parade, with over a thousand participants and tens of thousands attending in spite of the 90 plus temps!! It%26#39;s wild and crazy and then many stay downtown to continue the party, as you observed.

The good news about the new Merriman%26#39;s Kapalua is that we now have another wonderful restaurant to choose from that will be purchasing 90% of their produce locally and it will be organic. Can%26#39;t wait to try it and hopefully they will work something out so they do not disturb the Napili Kai guests too much. We%26#39;ll see:-)

We%26#39;re headed there on July 11th...will let you know. Can%26#39;t wait!

I get the cigarette smoke but how is the smell of Orange Macadamia Nut Crusted MahiMahi and Panko Crusted Lobster Skewers obtrusive? I%26#39;d pay extra for a condo with this...

Aloha,

According to info. from a friend in that area, Merriman%26#39;s has a filter system that really minimizes the food odors in the environment and they have also instructed their valets to be very quiet and considerate of the neighbors when parking the cars. Sound like good neighbors to me!

Bump. A couple posters said they%26#39;d be there early July. Anybody go? Was it oooh sooo gooooddd??
