best food prices

We will be traveling from TX to Kona and staying at a timeshare with a full kitchen. Is there items we can bring (to cut cost down) or what are the local prices to manage our money wisely? Thanks for everyone%26#39;s feedback.

best food prices

Do you really want to save a dollar or two? The prices here are not much higher than in mainland cities.

best food prices

with the luggage restrictions the airlines have added lately I doubt bringing food would be the wisest idea. We use our timeshare and always hit Safeway. (use the club card) Some things are going to be higher, but for the most part it%26#39;s not that bad.

Only thing I would bring would be small, light, high-cost-to buy-a-whole-one-for-what-you%26#39;ll-use stuff. Example if I planned to cook would be spices.

Costco folks rave about Costco. Othewise I would go to Safeway (with club card, sign up there if you ddon%26#39;t have one) and maybe get produce and fruit at a farmer%26#39;s market.

I would bring those little zip-locks of spices and that would be it.

Safeway will be the most familiar market for you but I like KTA.

Do the farmers markets for fruits/Veggies Coffee, Honey, Mac Nuts, Jams and like:

The Keauhou Farmer%26#39;s Market (Saturday, from 8:00AM to noon at Keauhou Shopping Center)

Kailua Village Farmer%26#39;s Market (Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday)

Alii Gardens Marketplace (Wed.-Sun., 9am-5pm)

International Market (Tuesday - Sunday, from 9am to 5pm

Milk, bread and gasoline are about the only things that are way more expensive there. KTA and Sack-N-Save are reasonable, and gas is cheapest at Costco, in Kona.

As previously mentioned, unless you want something unique, just buy here. (We typically bring much more food home than to Hawaii.) One word of caution about Costco; it is a membership warehouse. If you%26#39;re already a member and know the routine, fine. If not, you probably should forget it since it costs $50 to join. (Unless you are staying for several weeks to justify paying the membership fee.)

My limited experience is that prices go Safeway %26gt; Sack N Save %26gt; KTA. (Safeway most expensive, KTA cheapest.)

For staples such as cereal, juice, milk, bread, also consider Kmart and Walmart.

Wallmart and Kmart prices are MUCH higher than KTA or Safeway according to my wife.

Liquor is cheapest at Longs.

Safeway has the best meat prices and veg. selection

Sack N save..... poor selection and quality

Costco.... they know your coming and priced the condo supplies thtough the roof... and you have to buy huge quanities.. Hughest liquor is at costco.

Driving to Costco fromm kona is not fast will cost you several gallons of gas. Most locals have stopped shopping there as Safeway and other markets have copied their value packs....

Here is a concept..... bring spices.. thats it.

Also on arrival get the weekly newspaper ads and plan your meals around what is no sale..... otherwise you will pay for your pre-plan

Best farmers market is Saturday at Keauhou

Here are sample store prices: Bread..$4.50 to 5.50 80% burger...$3- 3.5 lb Milk..$5 a gallon Round steak $2.50 lb ceral...$4.5 Coke 24 pk..$6.5 Shrimp. $9. lb Butter..$4 lb Sour cream 16 oz...$4.00 Tomatoes $2.5 lb Lettuce $1.79 lb onions $1. lb Cheese $5.5 lb

eat local stuff...plan on what you eat when you see what is on sale here.... fish is very expensive

As you can see, some things are a lot more expensive, some are just a little, and some may be about the same price. So it all depends on what you%26#39;re planning to buy there.
