I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll all be glad when we finally take this trip (the 18th!!), so I stop asking all these odd questions.
I keep seeing references to ';plate lunches';. This is a term I%26#39;m not familiar with. It%26#39;s probably something really basic, but can someone clarify it for me?
Thanks!
PS - I read the reviews of the TA Picnic - sounds like you all had a great time - what fun. I%26#39;m looking forward to seeing the pictures soon.
Plate Lunches?
I can answer this question, since I had my share during my visit. A Plate Lunch typically consists of a protein item (beef, chicken, fish), scoops of gooey rice, and potato/macaroni salad. These meals are popular because they are HUGE portions, at a minimal price ($7.00 - $15.00...depending on the protein item).
Plate Lunches?
Here is a recent thread on plate lunches. It is just a combo plate with some local favorites. I love the mac salad they make here.

Yes it fun to meet some new faces and see Denny, Erica, pzp and her hubby at the TA get togethers.
Have a wonderful trip. I hope your weather is as good as I%26#39;ve had it. I would say it is some of the nicest weather I have EVER had on the island. Warm, cool breezes, a touch of rain for 5 minutes with a giant rainbow following. It has been wonderful.
We had dinner at Da Imu Hut in Hanapepe on Tuesday and all of us had ';plate'; meals. I had kalua pork, DH had chicken and a hamburger patty. 3chihuahuas had bbq pork and her DH had the same as my DH. Each meal came with a scoop or two of rice and a scoop of mac salad. The food was good and the service was VERY friendly. I think the entire bill was under $40 including soft drinks.
Another great ';plate lunch'; (though I%26#39;m not sure it qualifies as a traditional plate lunch) is from the Savage Shrimp truck in Poipu. The truck is parked on Lawai Road right in front of Prince Kuhio Park, just down the road slightly from Kuhio Shores. I had the most outstanding garlic shrimp from there just a week ago yesterday. The lady who runs it is extremely friendly and kind, and was very cheerful when I walked up to place my order. She%26#39;ll ask you if you want to eat it right there or if she can wrap foil around it for you to take with you. Since my condo was just across the way at Kuhio Shores, I opted for having it wrapped in foil. I sat on my lanai and enjoyed the shrimp.
Aloha from Kaua`i!
Some of my favorite places for ';plate lunches'; (aka ';Heart Attack on a Plate';!) here on Kaua%26#39;i are:
Koloa Fish Market - Old Koloa Town
Da Imu Hut - Hanapepe
Conrad and Wong%26#39;s - Hanapepe
Deli at Ishihara Market - Waimea
Fish Express - Lihu`e
Dani%26#39;s - Lihu`e
Mark%26#39;s Place -Lihu`e
Tip Top Cafe - Lihu`e
Pono Market - Kapa`a
L + L%26#39;s - Kapa`a
Village Snack Shop - Hanalei
Plate lunches consist of an entree, one or two scoop rice, and potato/mac salad - usually washed down with a big iced glass of fruit punch! The best IMO are usually called the ';Hawaiian'; plate and usually have laulau, poi, lomi salmon, rice and potato/mac salad.

Thanks for the great responses - and suggestions!
It%26#39;s too bad more and more visitors aren%26#39;t more familar with plate lunches. Then they wouldn%26#39;t complain so much about the supposedly high cost of eating out in Hawaii!! They are definitely the way to go for cheap eating! You got some great suggestions for plate lunch places on the island. Too bad you%26#39;re not going to Oahu, the best island for plate lunches because the choices there endless!!!
I like the fact that you can choose a tossed green salad over the potato/mac salad. Makes for a healthier option, and not so much starchy items:-)
Thanks again.
Counting down now - 10 more days!
When I get the hankering for a plate lunch on the mainland, I go to Ohana Hawaiian BBQ or L%26amp;L. Not quite like being on the islands but good food.
