August trip review of Kauai, Maui and Honolulu

In august we spent 4 days in Kauai, 5 days in Maui and 2 days in Honolulu for our honeymoon. Here is a review of some of our experiences with tips and recommendations.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND IN KAUAI

We rented our jeep from ALAMO through COSTCO which seemed to have the best rate. The Alamo kiosk was a short walk across the street from the baggage terminal and was simple to use. Then we boarded a shuttle bus for a 2 minute ride to the Alamo lot. There we chose one of the numerous Jeeps wranglers available and were our way. The whole process took less then 15 minutes from the time we picked up our baggage. If you are a Costco member you can also save a few bucks on gas at the Costco gas station in the southern part of Lihue.

We stayed in a privately owned cottage in Kilauea located on the North shore (VRBO#125965) it was exactly as described. The place was beautiful, clean, fully stocked with everything you need and plenty of privacy. The owners were very easy to deal with and upon completion of our trip my deposit was refunded promptly. If you visit the VRBO website you can get an accurate detailed description. I would highly recommend this location for couples.

The doors off helicopter tour with JACK HARTER was incredible. We read a lot of reviews on this and even though this company was more expensive then others we felt comfortable with our choice and they did not disappoint us.

WAIMEA CANYON was cool. We had great views all the way up except the very last stop which was covered in a cloud and you couldn鈥檛 see anything.

The SHRIMP STATION for lunch was awesome.

We had the ULTIMATE KAUAI BOOK and visited a lot of the waterfalls and secluded beaches. Some were better then others but I think its just personal preference and not worth commenting on them individually.

WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IN KAUAI

BUBBAS BURGERS was definitely not worth the wait the burgers were terrible.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND IN MAUI

We had good service with ISLAND AIR flying to Maui. Upon arrival we took the NATIONAL CAR RENTAL shuttle bus for a short ride to their lot and since we are emerald club members the driver bypassed the office and dropped us off right in front of our reserved Chrysler Sebring convertible.

We stayed in SUITE #306 of a privately owned condo complex named MAUI KAI located on the west shore near Ka鈥檃napali beach. That is accurately described in detail under VRBO#80505. It was exactly as described fully stocked with everything you need and the owners were easy to deal with. The sunset view from our condo was awesome!! and you are so close to the ocean you could almost jump off the balcony into the water. Again I received my deposit very promptly upon my return home. I would highly recommend this suite for couples.

The FEAST AT LELE in Lahaina was awesome reserve well in advance like we did and you get seated front row center.

FOUR WINDS II snorkeling trip to Molokini was excellent the Captain and his crew did an outstanding job and go out of their way to do it in a friendly manner. I tried snuba for the first time on this trip and would definitely do it again.

KIMOS restaurant in Lahaina was very good.

The road to Hanna is overrated with exception of the BLACK SAND BEACH which was beautiful.

Fly out of WEST MAUI AIRPORT which was 5 minutes from our condo. We returned the car at National car rental down the block from the airport and they shuttled us right over.

WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IN MAUI

LONGHIS RESTAURANT in Lahaina was terrible and expensive (being an Italian from New York I am going to be picky about my pasta especially if it鈥檚 over priced) this might have been the worst meal on the whole trip.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND IN HONOLULUL

We had good service with ISLAND AIR into Honolulu.

Arriving in Honolulu we took a van shuttle service which was much cheaper then a taxi to our hotel the OUTRIGGER WAIKIKI ON THE BEACH. At this time I made arrangements with the van driver to pick us up the next morning to take us to Pearl Harbor. At the hotel we had booked the cheapest room they had since it was only one night and we were pleasantly surprised to have a partial ocean and full city view from the 15 floor with a small balcony. Hanging out at WAIKIKI BEACH was great it鈥檚 definitely a very unique beach.

We ate dinner at the YARDHOUSE and watched some of the Olympics in a great atmosphere. They have over 50 different tap beers and numerous large screen TV鈥檚 showing sports.

The next day the van picked us up right on schedule at 6:45am in front of our hotel for our visit to PEARL HARBOR. We arrived there at 7:30 and were assigned the 4th group to boat over to the memorial. This worked out really nice because it gave us about 45 minutes to check out the museum and gift shop. I recommend renting a headset for audio narration.

Our flight home was a 9:30 pm that night. When we left our luggage that morning before heading to Pearl Harbor the hotel informed us that they provide on a first come first serve basis a courtesy room that you can use to shower and dress before departing to the airport. Since we returned from Pearl Harbor at about 12 noon this made it possible for us to spend the rest of the day shopping and swimming at Waikiki beach.

We had a very memorable and fantastic trip. I hope some of this information will help in your plans.
