West Maui....north loop drive.

Does anyone know what the name of the town is that ';travelfromseattle'; posted about....that is somewhere along the loop drive? She/he didn%26#39;t remember the name, but commented on stopping there, mainly because they had heard about the great banana bread sold there.

Thanks.

West Maui....north loop drive.

Pattie, it was probably Kahakuloa. I only took that drive once, by mistake. Couldn%26#39;t pay me enought to do it again!! Just me though, lots of people do it.

West Maui....north loop drive.

Patti -- you can gets lots of banana bread in Hawaii. Don%26#39;t drive Highway 340. Lots of long posts about the hazards of this road, and BTW -- your car insurance probably will not cover.

I know, it boggles my mind that people risk their lives to find great banana bread. (Revealed talks up the banana bread.)

Maybe I%26#39;m spoiled, but I%26#39;ve had a lot of great banana bread in my life, and never has a piece of it made me glad that I drove a one lane curvy road with a cliff drop into the ocean so I could taste it. LOL

People who write travel articles and blogs ... get an audience by talking stuff up and making the experience sound incredible. Otherwise they don%26#39;t get an audience. Then people follow the article and THEY now have an investment in it, to describe the adventure and the incredible taste ...

Nobody can get attention writing about simple pleasures like enjoying Napili or Kapalua -- no, you have to do the death-defying drive to have the ';less-traveled'; experience. You and hundreds of other people wishing to go where fewer people travel ... in the process overburdening a narrow rural road not intended for much traffic but to serve the small village and other local drivers.

(By ';you'; I don%26#39;t mean ';you Pattie.'; Just ';you'; the people who follow the write-ups.

*shakes head*

that road is worse then the road to hana

Aloha Pattie,

If you want the ';best'; homemade banana bread try the Honokowai Farmers Market Mon-Wed-Fri 7-11 on 3636 Lower Honoapiilani Rd. You won%26#39;t have to risk your life for it:-)

Sorry to hi-jack, but are you all saying it%26#39;s best to not drive the West loop at all? Or just that section that the OP is referring to in order to get the banana bread talked about in MR?

We were looking forward to driving the West loop and ending up at Iao Needle on one of our days. Is this inadviseable?

KK -- it%26#39;s the Hawaii=Disneyland folk. The highway is Space Mountain or something. Problem is - people DO get hurt, and the ride is actually NO fun.

It%26#39;s doable but be very careful. We did it once by mistake and it was the most stressfull drive of our lives. The turns are hairpin and on some of them you wonder if your car is gonna make it. I%26#39;m pretty sure your rental car agreement won%26#39;t cover it. Not saying don%26#39;t do it but approach with extreme caution

Thanks for the reply. We%26#39;ll skip the full loop and just only go part of the way up the coast.

One thing to watch out for is rocks falling from the hillside. The car in front didn%26#39;t watch. A good sized rock had tumbled onto the roadway and took out their rental car%26#39;s oil pan. Oil streamed out from under the car and they were stranded. Not a fun day in paradise...
