I have been thinking about the day trips we will be taking, and how many tourist have to purchase coolers while on the island for their day trips. Surely people are not bringing their coolers from home? And what happens to them when they are done? Do they go into a huge overflowing land fill?
Wouldn%26#39;t it be great to have a cooler exchange? Something like leave it at the resort for the next occupant, who pays to use it, and you get a discount for leaving it or something, if it is in good condition.
Is there anything like that in place? I just emailed my resort with this idea and encourage others to do so.
Recycling your coolers
you are not the first to think of this...
Normaly a small number are kept by the staff at rental cars drops.... the rest thrown in a dumpster... They are not recycled...
I wish we did not have them... they are ';almost'; as big a problem as the Plastic water bottles that many seem to just have to have... and get thrown away in parks, beaches and hiways... that is a huge problem on all islands.....
I wish folks would just learn our water is safe to drink and fill regular canteen up.....like everybody did 20 years ago....
good luck... bring a bag cooler...
Recycling your coolers
I bring my own cooler and chairs every year, and take them back with me. The cooler packs very nicely in my suitcase and I load things into it. Of course, it%26#39;s not a gigantic one with wheels, but it works well for a six pack of soda or water.
We bring a collapsible cooler from home. The condos we stay at usually provide one of the styrofoam types - have never needed to buy one. Bring plastic sandwich bags to make your own ice packs - if you have a freezer.
I will be bringing a softside collapsable cooler in our luggage. Put water bottles in the freezer the night before, they help keep everything cool and by the time you reach your destination they have defrosted and are perfect to drink.
We always bring a soft-sided cooler with us. Also, many owners provide coolers for guest use in their condo unit.
Many of us in Hawaii use a rolling cooler as luggage!
Put your stuff in, duct tape it closed, write you name on it %26amp; go! Check it just like any other bag.
We bring a collapsable cooler... many times a condo will have several previously used styrofoam coolers just sitting there for you to use.
On recycling.... we recycle cans, plastic and glass and bring them to the several recycling centers located on the island.
One final note....I have noticed that on the mainland, 7-11 stores encourage customers to reuse the cups by having a refill price. Why doesn%26#39;t 7-11 Hawaii do the same? This just encourages people to toss the cups and adds to the trash problem....
Another collapsible cooler fan here. What a brilliant invention actually.
At the Whaler...there is a closet and everything left in there is shared by everyone else. Beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers, books....It is really nice.
You can always buy a collapsible cooler at the ABC Stores while you are there, they have some with a hawaiian motif on them. Then you can bring it home as a souvenir!
