kayak on calm, beautiful river in early july?

hi everyone.

my fiance and i will be in Kauaii for 3 days in mid july (we will be in glacier national park before, and the big island afterwards).

We would like to do some kind of kayaking or tubing on a river. We have done white water rafting many times, but we really are looking for something really LOW stress. i dont want a trip where there is a guide screaming directions at me.

Are any of the rivers like this? can you just rent your own kayak and float down peacefully for 2 or 3 hours w/ only little rapids if any? any river that we coudl stop off at for picnic woudl be great too.

i found an old thread that touched on this..but it focused more on the picnicing part than the ';calm-ish'; river part!

thanks all!

Take a look at Outfitters Kauai for a guided tour. We did the The Hidden Valley Falls Kayak Adventure (http://www.outfitterskauai.com/hidden.html) which was fun.

You can also rent kayaks from various places and kayak on the Wailua River.

thanks! and this is a calm river?

We really liked kayaking the Kalihiwai River last summer. It%26#39;s very mellow and there are certainly places where you could pull off and have a picnic. The best part is that it%26#39;s not crowded at all like some of the other rivers such as the Wailua. You could rent a kayak in Hanalei and transport it to Kalihiwai Beach and put in there.

in july, kayaking hanalei river will be very peaceful and calm. hanalei river tends to be less crowded as wailua river and you won%26#39;t have to share river space with power boats. just other kayaker%26#39;s, paddle boarders, standing and laying. the ocean on the north side is so calm in the summer months, you can take your kayak over towards princeville area and snorkle @ hideaways, or even go towards napali side and poke around there. be sure to check the conditions before you head out though. one can never be too safe in the open ocean. on btw, if you decide on hanalei, lots of sunscreen and hat is a must. not a whole lot of shade in the open and hanalei river has lot less shade than other rivers.

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

We have nothing here with any type of ';rapids'; or ';white water'; - so don%26#39;t worry about that - our rivers are tremendously different from the mainland, very little current and extremely calm.

The Wailua River is very popular - but it tends to be pretty busy with kayakers and the big barge-type boats that go up to the Fern Grotto.

The Hanalei River is very calm and lazy - it goes thru Hanalei Valley and the taro fields there. Very beautiful scenery!

Either one would be peaceful and calm - but the one with less folks on it would be Hanalei.

There is also the Hule%26#39;ia River, but it goes thru a nature preserve and you must go with a guide, so I%26#39;d discount it for you.

Those are pretty much it as far as any type of kayaking rivers here!

agree w/ DesertBeachLover.

the wifey and i did kalihiwai - secluded, tropical, beautiful, and a very easy paddle.

it%26#39;s pretty short though (not sure if there are any guided tours of this river - i%26#39;d wager you could get a guided tour of just about anything if you wanted - not necessary for this river though)

thanks guys!

looks like the Hanalei river might be the one for us. i dont want to deal with big boats!

i would have loved to try the napali coast...but the hubby feels a bit more comfy with a river instead of the ocean....i might work on him though!
