scuba

Any thoughts on which scuba company to go with in Kauai? or for that matter, if it%26#39;s even worth diving in Kauai, and where the good spots are. (also if you have information about Hawaii and Oahu diving). Thanks

Tunnels on the North Shore is nice, and some companies have a DEEP water Ni%26#39;ihau dive (it%26#39;s an all day dive). BUT, if you are going to the Big Island of Hawaii I would save my money and dive there. If you look at a map, the Big Island is quite a bit further south and because the water is just a TAD warmer, the coral is MUCH more spectacular. And I mean MUCH better. If you are more adventurous, the Big Island has lava dives and lots of lava formations.

When we dive the Big Island, we always like to go out with Steve Frisbie of Wanna Dive Kona (www.wanna-dive-kona.com). Steve%26#39;s boat only holds 6 divers so you aren%26#39;t in the water with a bunch of other divers who spook off critters before you see them. And the waters around Kona are protected enough that you don%26#39;t usually need a big boat (like you do on Maui). Many of the large operators have boats that take 12-18 divers - and if you want to use a large boat, I would recommend Dive Makai (www.divemakai.com).

As much as we love Kauai, and enjoy snorkeling and diving here, I would agree that, given a choice, we would definitely take the BI, over kauai for scuba diving.

Also, the snorkeling on the BI is totally fantastic.

I know, I can hear the mumbles now. The great kauai lover suggesting another island.

Well, yep, facts is facts. We still hope to get over to the BI, for a series of dives before our Tahiti sailing and diving vacation in Oct. Including the night dive with the manta rays. Just sitting on the bottom blowing bubbles and watching the magic.

If the Kiluea Volcano continues to misbehave, we will dive here at koloa landing, and hopefully tunnels (to get some refresher dives in.)

On the BI, The VOG and poluntants would cause Erica to definitely have a major respiratory and sinus problem. I would do a bit better, but still be bothered by the vog and polutants.

Sorry, do not know anything about diving Oahu, others can help out, or perhaps try the Oahu TA board.

Have a great time !

Denny
