Scenic Drives?

I%26#39;ll be flying into Kauai for one day to take a helicopter tour because I understand Kauai is best seen from the air. But are there any scenic drives that would make it worthwhile to rent a car for the day? Or are most waterfalls, etc., ';hidden'; off-road?

Thank you.

Scenic Drives?

Just driving the main highway is a scenic drive on that island. So if you have the time, it%26#39;s worth it. I%26#39;d start at the airport and go north if you don%26#39;t have time to make the whole semi-loop around the island.

The drive to the end of the road at Ke%26#39;e Beach is awesome! Stop for a short walk on the beach and head back. On your way back you can stop by the fantasy island falls which is not too far off the beaten path.

A local expert here can give you the exact routes. But my point is DO IT if you have the time...it%26#39;s worth the rental.

Scenic Drives?

Every where we%26#39;ve driven on Kauai is a scenic drive! It would be well worth it to rent a car. It%26#39;s hard to get lost on Kauai, too! There are even 2 waterfalls near Lihue/Kapaa that you can drive to for nice views.

Thanks very much for the responses :) I%26#39;m still very interested in hearing from a local as well regarding particular routes that are perhaps more scenic though less known.

Actually, there aren%26#39;t many routes in Kauai by car that are ';less known'; to explore. Most of the off the beaten path routes are by kayak or foot.

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

A drive that I suppose isn%26#39;t the most common one here would be to turn at Kuamo%26#39;o Road (right by old Coco Palms Hotel) off the highway - this road winds uphill past Opaeka%26#39;a Falls, Hikinaakala Heiau, Wailua Falls overlook and goes up through lovely areas and ends up at the Keahua Arboretum - a beautiful park with a walking trail, stream and picnic tables.

Another one is simply what we call the ';Kipu

by-pass'; - you take the harbor road down at Nawiliwili and go past the small boat harbor - there will be a sign for ';Menehune Fish Pond'; and you turn right there, go through Niumalu community and up around to the Alekoko (or Menehune) fishpond - if you continue on this road you will wind through undeveloped fields and through tree-lined one lane bridges, one of which has a ';honor stand'; for fruit -- you have beautiful views of the mountains all around unobstructed by buildings - you ultimately come out at the intersection to the main highway. If the highway starts to back up or I just want a more scenic way to get to or from Lihu%26#39;e, this is the way I go.

Malama Pono,

Janet

We have done both of the ';tours'; that Janet mentioned and they both are nice drives. We have friends that just bought a house up the road from Opaeka%26#39;a Falls.
