Glass Beach

Has anyone been to this beach on the north shore? It sounds fairly difficult to get to, from what I%26#39;ve read. Is that true? Any comments welcome. Thanks.

Glass Beach

I was there in 2004... not really hard to get to, and really not worth too much effort.

Glass Beach

Only glass beach I%26#39;m aware of is on the south side. Is there one up north also?

We were there last month. Its not difficult to get to. You just drive right up to it. We followed the directions in the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook. Its not really a place to hang out, but it was interesting. When we were there we didn%26#39;t find many pieces of glass bigger than a piece of aquarium gravel. It really stunk in the area though. I guess because of the dump nearby. It is considered a west shore beach.

We were there last year and there is not much to it, but some locals were there and gave us a ride in the back of their truck through some old deserted fields, past a very old cemetery, to a very cool horse-shaped bay area that was totally secluded (except for a gouy living there in his car). We hung out, swam, very peaceful. Long walk back to the car but a great adventure!!!

The beach itself was not very interesting when we were there (maybe the amount of glass depends on the tides/time of year?), but the cemetary up the hill from it is really fascinating, if you%26#39;re into that kind of thing...

the reason for all the glass there (glass beach outside of hanapepe) is that it used to be a dump about 60 years ago...it%26#39;s really been picked over though which is why there isn%26#39;t much left. that beach is more for the explorer rather than the sun bather...i%26#39;ve found some really great pieces of old plates and bottles while %26#39;excavating%26#39; with my mom...

This is a beach off a very rough and rutted dirt road in Port Allen, which is on the West Side of Kaua%26#39;i.

I really would not recommend that anyone go there -- it isn%26#39;t that spectacular a beach, it is right underneath a huge gas plant and by a cemetery -- also we have had 2 murders there fairly recently.

The glass is tiny, and comes from a dump site that used to be off the coast -- unless you are big time into glass craft, not worth going to as I%26#39;ve seen plenty of visitors get stuck on that road!

This is DEFINITELY not a spot you would go to at night -- it is a big party spot and drug user spot -- if you do go, don%26#39;t go barefoot as you could step on something very unsanitary and nasty!

Sorry, but some of those guidebooks are total rubbish! There are reasons some of these places are not visited much!

My wife and I visited the glass beach back in 2002. It was by no means something to go out of the way for, but it was neat to see and the colors of the glass were astounding. If you are on your way through Port Allen, take a left off the highway and down a little road, and you%26#39;ll be there really quickly. It%26#39;s a good 5 minute stop for one of America%26#39;s quirky bits.

Never been to Glass Beach but I%26#39;ve been to Port Allen many, many times. Hubby has a customer out there and he went down there once. His opinion is the same as Koloagirl%26#39;s, not a big deal and kind of scummy. This is the one on the south side.

Is there another place on the north shore with the same name?

We revisited this beach this past FEb. MOst of the glass seems to be gone now. But the cemetary was interesting to wander around in.
