If you are VERY accomplised at both (or either), Paia will get you close to Ho`okipa beach with some of the best winds and waves on Maui.
Paia is a cute little town on the eastern shore just south of Kahului. Some would call it a hippie town and I must admit, that description suits it well.

Yes, the major wind is on that side of the island. However, the major lodgings are on the west side. It%26#39;s 30 minutes to drive across the valley. I%26#39;d stay in South Maui rather than West Maui; easier to get over to the east side. (Surfing is fine on west side.)
