Diamond Head Crater Hike

Okay need some advice.

Hubby and I are visiting Oahu in mid September for a week, after a week in Alaska.

Anyhow I really want to do the Diamond Head Hike, but my husband is not keen to do it.

It is something you would recommend to do as an activity on your own or should you really do it with someone else.

Do I have any volunteers to do the hike with me.

Would appreicate your input.

Diamond Head Crater Hike

Diamond Head trail is 1.4 mile R/T with about 760 feet vertical climb. It%26#39;s a paved trail with handrails then about 100 stairs at the top. It%26#39;s a pretty easy walk if one does any walking at all. Last time I was there a lady was walking it in high heels (not recommended). The view at the top is fabulous. Your husband will be missing out if he doesn%26#39;t go.

You%26#39;ll be fine going alone.

Hi Helen43Adelaide,

On a recent thread, marissany posted this link. The site includes a diagram of the trail as well as photos, including the stairs. Hope it helps with your decision to hike Diamond Head solo or not.

Aloha,

There will be plenty of company on the hike. It is very popular! I ended up taking pictures of almost a dozen different groups up on the top鈥?I must look very approachable. Actually, offering to take a picture is one of the easiest ways to strike up a conversation with someone.

I think it would be lovely to do on your own. The walk will give you plenty of time to take in just how beautiful Oahu is. And the best part, you had such a good workout, you can justify a huge meal afterwards! :-D

Thank you everyone for your input.

I did check out that map etc, it was so good, so yes I am definately doing the hike alone.

I can then brag how good it was to hubby to make him feel like he really missed out on an amazing experience and view.

Many thanks to everyone.

We will be doing this hike in late August with kids that are 8 and 10 years old. Will we be really uncomfortable in the heat if we do this as an afternoon activity?

';Will we be really uncomfortable in the heat if we do this as an afternoon activity?';

No. Take some water though.

It CAN get uncomfortable hiking Diamondhead in the afternoon in August. It could be 90 degrees F with high humidity and direct sun rays. There is very little shade for most of the hike. I would consider that uncomfortable, especially if you are not acclimated to it.

If you want to minimize the sweat, go in the late afternoon (if the morning is not an option). The park closes at 6:00. So if you start your hike after 4:30, you may have some shade on the way down.

Wheatonmum - I wouldn%26#39;t want to do the Diamond Head hike on an August afternoon!

We did it last August and arrived very early (about 8am I think) By the time we were on our way back down, the heat had become quite intense even though it was still early.

I didn%26#39;t think the hike was that easy and I%26#39;m not particularly unfit - the steps near the top are a real killer!!

Ok, maybe we will do it very early or late afternoon.

I REALLY want to go visit the North shore beaches such as Sharks cove amd Waimea beach either once or twice during our trip. I was concerned about the parking situation. Is the parking limited? Should we arrive very early to go these beaches?

Waimea Beach parking lot is usually full. Get there early if you want a parking spot. Or just wait 5-10 minutes %26amp; one will open up.

Ehukai Beach (Banzai Pipeline) may be full. But you can get a parking spot if you wait a couple of minutes. This is more of a surf spot %26amp; many just go to the beach there %26amp; take some pictures and leave.

Shark%26#39;s Cove will be no problem as there are several places to park in the area.

Sunset Beach should be no problem parking.
