Only six days to go before I leave!!!
I have pretty much decided not to take any paid snorkeling trips. After much reading of TA posts I decided that snorkeling off shore was just as good unless you are particularly interested in the boating part of the trip. Now I%26#39;m wondering....would it be worth taking the ferry over to Lanai and spending the day there snorkeling at Hulopoe Bay and visiting Lanai City? What are the chances of seeing dolphins in the bay? Is the snorkeling that great? BTW-I%26#39;m more of a novice at snorkeling so I won%26#39;t be hitting any of the more ';advanced'; locations on Maui.
Thanks for your help with my last minute question!!
Is Lanai worth a day tripTotally worth the trip to Lanai. Spinner dolphins are frequently at Hulopo%26#39;e and are not afraid of humans. A truly amazing experience if you are lucky enough to be there at the same time as them. Highly recommend lunch and a Mai Tai at the pool bar at The Four Seasons Manele as well.
Is Lanai worth a day tripAloha 2bkelia,
Well my biased opinion is that, yes, it is absolutely worth it. As I always say the only problem is that you will have such a great time and appreciate getting away from the hustle and bustle of Maui, that you won%26#39;t want to get back on the ferry at the end of the day. :)
There have been several similar posts to yours, so search the Maui and Lana`i forums for other people%26#39;s thoughts.
Snorkeling is only a small (but great part) of Lana`i. I would definately rent a Jeep from Adventure Lana`i Ecocentre and explore the remote parts of the island (as well as Lana`i City). If you haven%26#39;t seen this yet, here is a link to the inside page on ';things to do on Lana`i';.

Have a great trip in paradise!

yes, it%26#39;s worth it.
the day we did it, we were told a pod of spinner dolphins had JUST left the bay...we missed %26#39;em, but a lot of other people saw them!
keep to the left side of the bay. we saw a lot of people out there when we arrived so of course my contrarian husband wanted to go to the right...NOT nice!
Dogmom-that just cracked me up! It just sooooo sounds like a man:) I%26#39;m sorry I%26#39;m laughing.
The only thing I would really want to do on Lanai is snorkel (with a side trip to Lanai City) so I%26#39;m just trying to figure it all out. I really don%26#39;t want an expensive snorkeling excersion, I don%26#39;t want the hassle with renting a jeep and 4x4ing all over the island either.
Thanks for the input so far!
You may want to check out the Trilogy Sunset Sail to Lanai...great boat ride, great food etc. They drive you from the dock to the beach and then if you want you can take a shuttle bus tour of Lanai City. There is really no other way, unless you rent a jeep, to get up there. Easy way to do both things you want to do.
We took the Trilogy trip as well. The one that leaves in the morning Great catamaran trip - very enjoyable. Snorkeled in the morning ... and a van trip around Lanai City and a couple other parts of the island. Fun local driver. Excellent beachside lunch before sailing back. Lots of spinner dolphins.
I appreciated the captain%26#39;s comments about the island ... I learned alot.
2b, no need to apologize...laugh away! in retrospect, so do i!
at the time, it wasn%26#39;t funny...i kept trying to get his attention to tell him i wanted to head back...sheesh, he just kept motivating! zero visibility, dodging boulders almost up to the surface...i%26#39;ve learned to stay pretty close in if it%26#39;s just the two of us, because dear husband is one LOUSY snorkel buddy! i could drown %26amp; get washed out to sea...he%26#39;d never know!
Yes the trip to Lanai for a day is WELL worth it! It%26#39;s Lanai. Please. I saw a pod of spinners going over on the boat.
And I%26#39;m an excellent snorkeler for a man, of course! Just watch out for the glow off my suit! :)
Caddy -- why were the spinners taking the boat? Were they tired? ';Dolphins Ride Free'; Day?
Ha! Ha! I%26#39;m sorry BLBL. I just can%26#39;t type....Ha! As we were coming into dock in Lanai, there was a very nice pod of spinner dolphins off the port side of the boat. From what I understand from those amoungst us, that seems to be the norm for those sweet dolphins near Lanai.
And to WHOM might you be addressing BLBL? The Caddy? Thank you very much ';Ms. Johnson';, my 9th grade English teacher.
Take care BLBL... Peace Caddy :)
