Coconut Marketplace Theatre closed

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

For all you movie goers out there - the island has one less theatre now - the Coconut Marketplace Cinemas have closed - the word is they are going to be renovating them along with the rest of the shopping village - but no word on when they will

re-open - I imagine it will be awhile.

That means only Kukui Grove Cinemas (4 theatres) and Waimea Theatre (2nd run from Kukui Grove) - for all us cinemaphobes out here - it is a far cry from the days just a few years ago when we had 5 movie theatres to choose from!

Going today to see the Al Pacino flick ';88 Minutes'; -our Sunday matinee movie ritual!

Malama Pono,

Janet

Thanks for the info. We usually use a movie to kill a little time the last day before our late flight home. I will take this one off my list. I think the one in Lihue would be better anyway...closer to the airport.

Janet,

Let me know how 88 mins was... we may go see it this week.

I%26#39;m glad we rarely go to the movies; Kukui Grove is a long drive from Moloa`a Bay.

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

';88 Minutes'; was entertaining, but no great flick - a decent way to pass an hour and a half - but don%26#39;t go out of your way to see it.

It is part of our weekly routine to see a movie on Sunday afternoons - regardless of what is playing!

Sometimes that doesn%26#39;t give us much of a choice, as you can well imagine!

Kukui Grove is a wonderful theatre though - family owned and the employees are outstanding - most of them have worked there for years and you get to know them by name - so you know they are being treated right by the owners. We are such ';regulars'; on Sundays that when one of the girls behind the counter sees us, she just starts getting our popcorn and soda order ready! That%26#39;s the kind of place it is - very local and friendly!

Malama Pono,

Janet

We were just there last week and saw 21. One of the stairways was taped off and closed.

Looked pretty sad, but the fellow manning the window and acting with double duty at the refreshment counter was freindly and pleasant.

Movie was fun, and kept us entertained.

Agree with the Grove theater, it is always a nice experience, and they share aloha, each time we have been to the movies there.

Plus they are very close, and no long drive.

Thanks for the heads-up koloagirl. That%26#39;s a bummer as my son and I were going to take an afternoon off to catch a flick.

This may be a message we begin to see more and more often. I get the strong feeling from a handful of folks I%26#39;ve talked to recently that the financial hiccups and looming recession on the mainland is about to start hitting us too. I could well be wrong, but there%26#39;s a whiff of trouble in the air.

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

Just an update on this - in today%26#39;s paper it was noted that there are no plans to continue the use of the property as a theatre - rather office space or possibly a restaurant.

Junk! I%26#39;ve always heard they intended to refurbish the theatre and re-open it at some point.

Bye-bye Coconut Theatre - I enjoyed your creaky seats, sticky floors and no a/c for the last year - I really did! And you managed to get some pretty good films despite it all!

Lots of us will miss you! Aloha %26#39;oe.

Malama Pono,

Janet
