We are planning a 10 day holiday on Kauai late Nov. 2008. I am overwhelmed by all the information!!!! Do you have any suggestions for an area for us to stay in. We have a 10 and 11 year old and plan to spend most of our time swimming in the ocean. What part of the island is most suitable for swimming at this time of year? Thankyou.
What part of Kauai for swimming in late Nov. ???
Definitely the south side (Poipu) for consistent swimming conditions. Surf will tend to rise on the north shore at this time of year - great for surf contests but bad for swimming. Of course, you can get a random south swell and totally negate everything I%26#39;ve just said :P

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!
November is winter conditions - which means the North Shore of all islands experience high surf and rough ocean conditions -- so I definitely wouldn%26#39;t plan on the North Shore for swimming.
The South Shore (and parts of the West Side) have generally calm ocean conditions during this time - altho%26#39; you should check ocean conditions at any beach area before going in - you can have rough surf anywhere at various times.
Po%26#39;ipu Beach Park here on the South Shore is great for families - a rock walled area keeps an area safe for the keikis and there is plenty of snorkeling and swimming around the area. Also it has lifeguards, bathrooms, showers, pavilions, etc. As does Salt Pond Park in Hanapepe - another great place for families.
Hope this helps!

Thankyou very much for the answers, as I delve further into these forums I see many of my questions have been answered already. I will come back if I have more questions. AKM

Stay south. If you get lucky there will be some time when the surf isn%26#39;t too high in the north, and you can schedule a day trip.
