I wasn%26#39;t aware of current volcano conditions, until I%26#39;ve read a few replies to my other post. Essentially, we will be traveling with our 18 month old daughter at the end of May/early June.
Do conditions typically clear up after a month?Right now, our itinerary in order is: 2 nights in Waikoloa, 2 nights in Hilo, 1 in Volcano, and 2 in Captain Cook. We have booked a B%26amp;B in Volcano, would it be wise to cancel? I definately do not want to endanger our daughter with fumes etc.
If it%26#39;s okay/safe, we still plan to go, but just keep our expectations in tow of what we%26#39;ll be able to see (obviously avoiding Iki Trail, viewing the lava up close at night etc.). Assuming conditions get better, are there any trails/sights that we could take our daughter on? ie Lava Tube trail? We could still drive and view the lookout points, visitor center etc. Thanks!
VNP - Should we avoid? Traveling end of May w/18 mo...
Ok....I am a healthy ,active, outdoor loving adult..
In a car, windows up , AC on, vents closed ,10 miles
out of Hilo I started feeling ill... and it continued all the way to Capt Cook area... with visability below 1/2 mile to 5 miles.
I run my AC in Kona 24/7 with windows closed now.
No one has ever seen this condition and its island wide and also to other islands like Maui too...
This has never happened before in history here. ( that we know)..not even the scientists understand ..
It could stop tonight or go on for 20 years. This is the most active volcano in the world.... the last eruption started in 1983 !!!.. and is still going. This is not a seasonal thing..
Go to the Parks web site on hazards... even before the last blow up the park issued caution for children... when it was clear!!!
At the present time there is no place in the park or area suitable for a infant... and no hike either
That includes southern 25% of the island...
Let me put it this way, The vog index today in Kona is 8 and 10 is the max. it used to be 2 to 4..
I personaly would not stay anywhere south... including Capt Cook, and especialy the Volcano area or anywhere above 1000 ft elevation....Hilo is Clear Id stay more in Waikoloa Beach

ama---I hope you are on the phone right now scrambling to change your plans!
Colorless sulfur dioxide gas and gritty ash are your main concerns. I would avoid staying in the volcano area with an infant or anyplace else that may be vulnerable to these fumes and ash.
Check the Volcanoes National Park website and click on the warnings/precautions link.
If I were you I would make some changes to my hotel bookings.
When you go to the volcano for the day check at the Visitor Center. They have a Ranger there who can tell you the conditions for that particular day. Things change daily so it%26#39;s hard to plan.
Make sure the vents are closed in your car and use the a/c.
Thank you for your advice. Obviously, we won%26#39;t do anything that would put the health of our daughter in danger. The hard part is not knowing if these conditions would ';clear'; up by the time we visit, and at the same time I don%26#39;t want to travel and try and book hotels at the last second.
If you consider the air quality in Capitan Cook area not safe, what about Kona? We were trying to arrange our itnerary so we could take in the various sights of the big island. We wanted to stay there, mainly because we would be close to the Kealakekua bay, Place of Refuge, and Kona coffee farms.
We are currently scheduled for 2 nights in Hilo. Mainly to check out waterfalls, zoo, garden, downtown etc. I%26#39;m thinking we could extend an additional night here and cancel our Volcano stay.
I am just wondering if I should work to re-book everything or cross my fingers and then re-book as our departure date gets closer...Thanks.
yesterday...Capt cook and place of refuge were nasty, Kona is less nasty but not great.
From the Hiway... I could not see Capt Cook Bay through the haze... Coffee country was very bad...
I would not consider the volcano area or the park unless things change.. go to the park web site... look at the closures.
What about snorkeling in those areas Place of Refuge and Captain Cook? We are scheduled for this week.
Wow. Everything didn%26#39;t seem to bad from April 12-17.
Good luck HD with the AC and hope things clear off for you and TT fairly quickly.
%26gt;%26gt; Do conditions typically clear up after a month? %26lt;%26lt;
There%26#39;s no way to tell what the volcano will or will not do tomorrow, much less a month from now. If you%26#39;re really concerned, change islands. O`ahu is mildly affected, Kaua`i even less. Otherwise, you pays your money and you takes your chances.
We just got back from Oahu when they had one of their worst days, looked very similar to a typical day in Los Angeles with moderate smog, when you looked at the horizon is was whiteish instead of a clear blue. The papers claimed was not a health hazrd only a visible thing, but it was so much nicer once it cleared out. Oahu is 300 miles away from the source so I can only imagine how bad it must be closer.
Thank you everyone. We will monitor the situation and once it gets closer, decide if we want to re-book and move around our itinerary. Worst-case we will avoid the southern parts of the island, and concentrate our stay in Kona, Wakiloa, and Hilo. Thanks.
