Sport shoe / sandals help from active people please...

Aloha:

We%26#39;re finally on the 60 day countdown... I really want some input about footwear. I want suggestions for some sort of sport sandal that is good for the beach but heavy duty enough for a bit of easy hiking. Please include, not only the brand(Teva etc.) but also the specific model you would suggest. By the way, I%26#39;m a guy but would like info for wifey too.

By the way, the advice and kind feeling from this board have been a breath of fresh air. Can%26#39;t wait to get there and share the aloha...

Mike

I live in my Teva Terra Fi%26#39;s. I do have light hikers for more difficult hikes, though.

My husband and both wear the Teva Sport Sandals...the Ominum. They come in several colors for both men and women. I am a girly girl and I still like the look and colors...mine are mauve and beige. They are airy and cool, but have a closed toe and are totally water proof, so you can walk through streams, etc and they will dry quickly. I ordered them direct through the Teva website.

Keen sandals are great. They are not that attractive and not that cheap - but well worth the price. They are very comfortable, durable, can be worn in the water, and have great traction for hiking in the mud.

You can get them at a lot of sporting good stores. My husband and I both have the Newport model and love them. Have worn them hiking in Kauai too.

I got a pair of Keen Venice H2 sandals both for our trip in June and for general wear in my every day life. I read loads of positive reviews on several sites before buying them, and I%26#39;ve been wearing them to break them in before Kauai. I guess it depends on what you%26#39;re used to -- if you%26#39;ve always hiked in a closed shoe, then you might be more comfortable with a lightweight, waterproof hiker. I%26#39;m used to wearing Tevas and flip flops all summer, to the beach, etc., so I think between the Keens and a pair of flip flops (plus a ';nice'; pair to wear to dinner with a sundress), it should be all I need for this trip.

Oh, and I couldn%26#39;t agree with you more about this forum!

I had my everyday birkenstocks (traveled in), and nice flipflops for dresses. I also had a pair of surf shoes (old and cheap) and Lands End hiking beach sneakers (not well enough broken in and caused blisters on the kayak/hike to falls. This was the least shoes I have ever ever traveled with.

Lawrence had his everday topsiders, surfshoes, and Landsend beach hikers. While in Kauai he did break down and bought walmart ';slippas'; (flipflops). We did not hike much at all though (plans are fluid in Kauai..)

Keen%26#39;s are very good sandals. Not inexpensive but very good comfort and quality and long lasting. I purchased some river hoods for a float/fish camping trip last summer and have them safely tucked away for the the next river trip. This thread tipped my memory and just ordered the Newport and Venice for us. We will have the Longs or similar flip flops on hand as well. and some golf shoes, and some fins, geez.)

We bought some Teva%26#39;s last week for our upcoming hikes. I%26#39;ve worn them everywhere so far and they are very comfortable. We got the light and softer leather and they hug the foot very nicely. They also have great traction. We got ours for around 87.00 at SoleMates in Coconut Marketplace. Well worth the price for comfort!

Here%26#39;s a couple more sites for Teva and Keen (we%26#39;re fans of both, love the toe coverage on the Keen, again, not pretty, but do the job and are comfortable)...

You could try Zappos, as well...

I swear by Merrells and my wife swears by Keens... also like my Tevas and the brand that a lot of people are getting fanatical about are Chacos... for a specific model, check out the Merrell convertible that I%26#39;m taking to Kauai... it%26#39;s a hiking sandal that converts to a slip-on by removing the back... here%26#39;s the link...

My whole family has Keens, and we have worn them on vacations for hiking and beach time, kayaking, canoeing, biking, etc. I wear mine when I ref my son%26#39;s soccer games, too, and they%26#39;re fine for running around on wet grass. They have a nice protected toe box for hiking on trails with rocks. Since the sides are open, I do occassionally get little pebbles and stuff in them, but they easily slip on an off. And the open sides are nice when you%26#39;re in the water (e.g., putting in a kayak.)

I have the Keen Venice, DH and the kids have the Newport H2. I would have preferred the webbing fabric of the Newport, but it seemed like the backstrap on those dug into the back of my ankle and the Venice didn%26#39;t. So definitely try on a couple pairs as these are a bit of an investment. But I think they%26#39;re completely worth it!

If you can%26#39;t find what you%26#39;re looking for in a store, try zappos.com. Free shipping both ways, so you can order a few sizes and send back what doesn%26#39;t work.
