where to go/stay for a quiet, non-touristy vacation w/infant

Can anyone recommend a non-touristy resort with beautiful beaches where my wife and I can have a romantic vacation with our 3-month old? We don%26#39;t really care whether it%26#39;s all-inclusive or not...we%26#39;re more concerned with beautiful beaches/rooms and privacy. And our price limit is around $400ish per night.

Thanks!!!

A non-touristy resort on Maui is probably an oxymoron!

Glad you are not looking for all-inclusive, because if you are thinking of Mexico%26#39;s all-inclusive deals, those are not to be found anywhere on Hawaii except maybe something like Kona Village Resort on the Big Island and even that%26#39;s a stretch.

If you can up the price a bit (or cut short a day or two) The Four Seasons on Maui is wonderful. I saw several families with babies under the cabana by the kiddie pool. The hotel will give you everything you need from pack %26amp; play%26#39;s by the pool, cribs %26amp; diaper genies in the room etc. I honestly don%26#39;t know what the cheapest rate is there but I have heard some mention of a 5th night free promo. It%26#39;s worth looking into for beautiful beaches, rooms and privacy.

Since the 4S has been mentioned: I did alot of research on resorts in Maui and for my needs (nice room, beach, privacy) this was going to work for me but I ended up going to Kauai after all that research. The starting rate at 4S is $475 a night per their www site; they are running a 5th night free special, but that applies to their higher rate rooms which for that promotion start at $620. You have to pay the higher rate of $620 for this promotion to apply. I did feel though that the rate of $475 for even their basic room was going to fit my needs perfectly. I was going to be happy paying a little more for the 4S than staying anywhere else on Maui. And with the extras 4S includes and most other resorts do not, the extra $ was going to be well worth it.

We choose the Napili Kai Beach resort in Maui for ours with 4.5 and 1.5yr old.

Aloha mbishop,

The closest I have seen to the non-touristy resort with beautiful beaches is the place my sister loves to stay at, The Makena Surf. It has a gated entry and when I have been there to visit her, the 1/2 mile crescent beach has been almost deserted. I don%26#39;t know if it is within your price limit, but I think it is worth checking.

With an infant I%26#39;d prefer a condo to a hotel. You%26#39;ll have more space, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a large private lanai or balcony, a washer and dryer. I%26#39;d want to stay where I wouldn%26#39;t feel %26#39;deprived%26#39; by having to be there there while Baby napped or was in bed early. (More home away from home.) Some have maid service or can arrange for it as often as you wish.

Look at these beachfront resort condos in South Maui:

Polo Beach Club, Wailea Ekahi and Elua, Mana Kai Maui, Hale Pau Hana, Sugar Beach. Makena Surf, mentioned earlier, is lovely, but I think more than $400 per night. South Maui is usually nice year-round, whereas far north in West Maui can be cool, rainy and windy in the winter/early spring.

Hmmmm... I%26#39;m thinking there are a couple of oxymorons here... non-touristy resort, and romantic vacation with 3 month old :-)

Napili Kai is a great suggestion, and you might want to look at the Ritz in Kapalua, although they sit a fair bit back from the beach. But the Four Seasons has a stellar reputation for handling families with young children.

Look at the condos and resorts on wizardpub.com. The youngest we%26#39;ve brought the kids was 7 months and 9 months. It only became romantic once the kid(s) had their own room or we (adults) had our own room and that was best done in a condo. I would check out the condos on Napili Bay and in South Maui/Wailea/Makena. Even the Kapalua Villas would be a good idea if you want to be away from the crowds. To me a ';resort'; says tourist only. I would pick a low density, low rise condo if you want the most privacy.

I would agree that Kapalua Villas is a good option. Get an oceanfront villa and you can have very romantic dinners on your lanai if you don%26#39;t mind doing some of your own cooking. My husband and I just returned from there and loved hanging out on our lanai.

If you book directly through an owner on vrbo-dot-com, you can get a unit well under $400. If you book through one of the agencies, either Ridge Realty or Sullivan, you can likely get an oceanfront for under $400. If you book through Kapalua Villas directly, you can probably get a regular oceanfront, but not a gold oceanfront for under $400. We booked through Costco and got a gold oceanfront for less than $400 a night (including taxes!) and that included a car rental and some resort credit and activities. Great deal.
