My kids are now old enough to body surf. We%26#39;ve always looked for the ';Baby'; type beach on Kauai but now that they are 6 %26amp; 9, they love to body surf (started last summer in Molokai) and they are great swimmers. Can anyone tell me where a good body surfing beach is on Kauai W/O the crowds? Poipu Beach tends to be too crowded in the summer for my tastes. Tunnels and Ke%26#39;e are great for snorkeling. And Maha`ulepu and Poli Hale both tend to be a bit too rough. I%26#39;ve never actually looked for this type of enviroment before so any help would be greatly appreciated. We will be there for 2 weeks at the end of June. Thanks!
Good body surfing beach?Kauai has some very young surfers, but 6 yrs old, and 9, if not very familar with body surfing the beaches in california, need to be well aware of the ocean, waves, rip tides, currents, etc.
The ocean here is extemely unforgiving.
maybe let them have some fun a kalapaki, with your strict supervision, and being in the water with them. The beach is un-guarded.
Brenneckes, might be too crowded , unless they stay in close to shore and ride the white water. A boogie board might be a good idea.
We just had a male flight attendant drown at kalapaki, and how he managed that, I really do not know.
Please, continue to do your homework, and take good care of your family around our ocean. It is totally indifferent of any human being. Young or old.
Actually, I am very concerned about your idea.

Good body surfing beach?Last June I was able to body surf at Kalihiwai and Rock Quarry beaches. There was a surfking school giving lessons at one portion of Rock Quarry, but plenty of room left for me to body surf. Hanalei Bay is also a possibility, but in the summer it is too flat much of the time.
I%26#39;m not looking for ';surfing'; lessons, just a beach that has some smaller waves so that they can ';body'; surf. They did this at Devil%26#39;s Bay in the BVIs (at The Baths on Virgin Gorda) and also at the Beach Village at The Lodge at Molokai Ranch. They loved it. Also, I%26#39;ve lived in Southern California all my life and I get ocean and waves. I used to body surf at The Wedge in Newport Beach all of the time. Just thought I would ask and see if there are some beaches that have this type of wave. Poli Hale is way too rough and Poipu Beach is too crowded.
Kalihiwai may be your best best - waves weren%26#39;t big at all and it is a nice sandy bottom that drops off gradually. There were other kids about the age of your kids in the water there.
Thanks, I%26#39;ll check it out.
BTW, great website...
www.KauaiExplorer.com
Has information on the most popular beaches as well as surf condition trends, etc.
I%26#39;m not sure about June but in August we body surfed and used our boogie boards at Kealia... the waves were great nothing too big or scary and not super crowded either. We had kids of all ages all around us... all having a blast. Kealia is just north of Kapaa. I%26#39;m pretty sure there was a lifeguard stand too.
I grew up in the OC, body surfing and boarding at Newport and San Clemente... and I love Kauai... but I do respect the ocean there a lot more than S.Cal. I don%26#39;t know why but they do have rip tides that come in pretty fast and I was very careful in California too... but in Kauai please be extra careful and do your research on the beaches before you go out. If we are going for a play in the waves day I almost always now go to a lifeguarded beach just to be careful.
Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!
';Martik'; - I know that you are familiar with the island and especially here in the Po%26#39;ipu area - so you probably know about Brennecke%26#39;s Beach - while it certainly can be too much for little ones to handle at times - sometimes I see lots of keiki about that age in the water there with boogie boards and body surfing. Since you usually stay just down the road, I%26#39;d at least check it out when you are here. I do know that it is supposed to be the best boogie boarding and body surfing area on the island - even since Iniki took out a lot of the sand.
While I am by no means knowledgeable about body surfing or boogie boarding here - I do know that I%26#39;d stick to beaches where there is a lifeguard closeby just in case.

Janet,
Thanks, I was looking for something less crowded. Also, daddy will be close by and he is an excellent swimmer and a triathlete. He swam from Maha`ulepu to Kipu Beach and back last March. And he will be in the water or on the shore at all times. We%26#39;ll just have to watch the surf conditions and see what%26#39;s good at the time. There are sometimes some nice little waves at Salt Pond.

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!
Yes Martik - Salt Pond Park would be good - you do have nice little waves there, but it is still protected from the open ocean - they also have lifeguards, etc.
Should check that out while you are here! Always less crowded than Brennecke%26#39;s or Po%26#39;ipu Beach.
Me - today is my b-day and I%26#39;m celebrating by taking a poke bento out to Maha%26#39;ulepu all by myself (Doug is working) and enjoying the ocean and beauty of Kaua%26#39;i! Just me and the sand and surf - hooray!
Malama Pono,
Janet
