Maui County Civil Defense posted a health advisory due to the sulfur dioxide emissions from Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawai`i filtering over all of the islands in Maui County for several days. VOG or volcanic fog is a haze that hangs in the air and blows inland from the South when the Trade Winds stop. Today, it was not possible to see the adjoining islands or upcounty Haleakala due to the haze.
When planning your outdoor events, check the local weather, or go on-line to

Vog and health alerts
Should be cleared out Saturday afternoon with the return of the tradewinds. But as long as the eruption continues, these conditions are possible.
It wasn%26#39;t as bad in west Maui(Lahaina/Ka%26#39;anapali) but really bad in south Maui(Kihei/Wailea) today.
Vog and health alerts
I notice that the Maui Civil Defense doesn%26#39;t assign a color to the alert. From the warning, sounds like a yellow alert. On the Big Island, near Volcano is on RED alert and was PURPLE alert last week. Green is normal, yellow is light advisory, then orange, red, and purple (evacuation advised).
It%26#39;s noteworthy that Maui is getting an alert though. (but I wouldn%26#39;t freak out, conditions are much worse further south).
I really hopes it goes away or stops soon. I go in 28 days and I was just diagnosed with pneumonia. I%26#39;m a little worried about the air!
I feel bad for visitors just there for a few days. I love seeing the other islands from the beach.
in looking at NASA satellite photos the plume is about 60 miles wide and 300 to 400 miles long.. and extends all the way to Kauai.... as a lite to medimum haze visable at dawn and Sunset... where it wipes the sunset out pretty much
The trades start and stop all the time and until the Kiluea vent slows down or stops... its going to be with us.....
HawaiiDan,
Can you post the link to see those images? Would love to see that.
after two days of vog on Hilo side, I%26#39;m starting to cough and my chest is really irritated. I was trying to not think about it and certainly not get anxious about it, but unfortunately it%26#39;s doing a number on my lungs anyway.
I don%26#39;t know what to say to someone with serious lung issues. If you are well, I%26#39;d say come. If you%26#39;re actually sick (lungs), I would seriously consider not putting yourself into it.
If your trip is in the future, I wouldn%26#39;t panic because the S02 levels could decrease. They%26#39;ve been elevated since January, but no one knows if that will continue. Vog will be with us as it has been since the 1990%26#39;s, but the dangerous level of S02 may drop at any time. (I certainly hope so, or I might have to move!)
KK as always thanks for the local info. Hawaiidan, do you have a link on that website with pics?
Of course my solution is to put a giant pink cork in that spewing vog machine!!!....Oh, I know I%26#39;m gonna get deleted....hee..hee..
go to Hawaiian Volcanoes National park.
select ';closures';
at the bottom of the page is a list :
NASA; Hourly Vog readings: Daily science report
Then sub sections....maps and hazard zones ...its a whole lot of data
BUMP and ';thumbs up'; Hawaiidan...
We will be in Maui starting May 11th. I%26#39;m starting to get a little worried about this.
We will be at the Hyatt is this affecting the air there also??
