Is there a Lobster Season in Kauai? When is is? We are looking into buying some fresh tails and cooking ourselves and was just curious about this... couldn%26#39;t find any details on the net.
Lobster Season?
Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!
Here is an article talking crab and lobster season here:
HONOLULU 鈥?At the start of the open fishing season for lobster and Kona crab, the Department of Land and Natural Resources wishes fishers to have a safe and productive fishing experience, and reminds fishers that new laws and rules apply to the open season that began Sept 1.
Specifically, the take of female spiny lobsters and female Kona crab is prohibited as a result of the passage of Act 77, by the 2006 state Legislature. The Hawai%26#39;i Fishing Regulations booklet, available at all Division of Aquatic Resources offices, shows how to determine the sex of spiny lobsters and Kona crabs.
For fishermen who use lobster nets, these nets fall under the current definition of lay gill nets and are technically subject to rules that apply to lay net fishing. Nets must be registered with the Department, not exceed maximum length of 125 feet, height of 7 feet, and have a minimum mesh size of not less than 2-3/4 inches.
Nets must also have floats displaying the registration ID number, conform to the maximum soak time, be inspected every two hours, and be attended and fished during daylight hours only.
There are areas closed to lay gill netting 鈥?Kailua Bay and portions of Kane%26#39;ohe Bay on O%26#39;ahu, the southeastern O%26#39;ahu coastline (Portlock to Pearl Harbor), and all Maui waters.
There are variations in these rules specific for Moloka%26#39;i and West Hawai%26#39;i. Fishers in these areas are asked to review the rules or consult their local DAR offices for details.
Other current rules that apply include that spiny lobsters must be 3-1/4 inches in carapace (head portion of the lobster%26#39;s body) length, spearing of spiny lobsters is prohibited, and lobsters must be possessed whole with head and tail attached.
Slipper lobsters must be 2-3/4 inches in tail width and spearing of slipper lobsters is prohibited. There currently is no requirement to release female slipper lobsters.
For details, please consult the Division of Aquatic Resources Web site (www.hawaii.gov/dlnr/dar) the current Hawaii Fishing Regulations booklet, or call any of DAR%26#39;s offices.
Malama Pono,
Janet
P.S. the season opens Sept. 1st.
Lobster Season?
Most all the lobster here is flown in...very expensive. I think when last I looked a 1.25 lb lobster was at $30 each
Same with Shrimp and crab. Only some freshwater farmed shrimp available fresh... all othere come from Melaisia and Thiland
Kona has live Maine lobsters at KTA and Kona Cold lobster, year around. There will be frozen tails available at many larger markets
Local fresh lobsters...if even available will all go to locals who catch them or restauraunts. I have never seen fresh tails for sale ....
There is no '; big'; fishing fleet here. much of our fish is imported including most Mahi
Yikes that%26#39;s a high price... I didn%26#39;t realize they flew them in or the locals also sold to restaurants... that%26#39;s fine... looks like will be sticking to all the yummy fresh fish we enjoy there!
Thanks everybody!
Contrary to Dan%26#39;s assertions, aquaculture is one of the fastest growing industries in Hawai`i, and that includes marine shrimp farming. I have friends in Hawi who are in the early stages of a new aquaculture enterprise and while they are starting with tilapia their ultimate goal is marine shrimp farming.
And while there is farmed-raised Maine lobster and dungeness crab from Hawai`i island, much of that ends up in restaurants. Spiny Kona lobster and Kona crabs, which are indigenous to our waters, and while we may not have a large lobstering fleet here, we do have independent divers and fishermen who bring the crusteceans in. From Sept to April you can find live, fresh Kona lobster and crab at many local markets.
Kona Cold Lobster does this in Kona ( natch) The problem is that there is now no real way to get it to the other islands because Aloha shut down 85% of the air freight between the islands.. SO...stuff from one island has wont be accessable to other islands as it has in the past till the superferry arrives.
It will have to be frozen and take up to a week for it to be shipped by barge and tug boat at 15 mph
