If we want to taste the real ';hawaiian'; food - what do we need to try - besides Spam - we can get that at Big Lots here at home LOL.
Is there a good restaurant (walking from Waikiki) that serves home style island fare?
Thanks again for the info - you guys are terrific!
Hawaiian food?No one here in Hawaii would consider spam ';Hawaiian food';. There is a marked difference on what is ';Hawaiian'; and what is of local fare.
Hawaiian food? You want... Ono Hawaiian Foods, 726 Kapahulu Ave.
Yes it%26#39;s walking distance at the Zoo/Kapiolani park end of Waikiki, but inland near the end of the Ala Wai canal.
Also look for anywhere serving ';plate lunch';... two scoops rice, one scoop macaroni salad, and a fried something(!) like chicken katsu, mahi mahi, or loco moco (hamburger with fried egg).
There%26#39;s one place on a patio near the Royal Grove hotel.
Although not Hawaiian food, L%26amp;L Hawaiian Bar B Que on Kuhio just North of the International Marketplace is real fine. Cheap, too. Chuck...
Thank you so much - there is a lot to take in!
Here is a link where the author of the site chooses his favorite Hawaii regional cuisine restaurant and his favorite local plate lunch places and in case you don%26#39;t
realize local cusine and Hawaii regional cuisine is usually different and this site helps to distinguish.

Yes, a great ';plate lunch'; place is L and L BBQ and there is a location right there in Waikiki. Ono Hawaiian food is good too but a bit more expensive. Wailana Coffe House has some good local items on their menu. And if all else fails, even McDonalds has some local items on their menu!!
Aloha,
We%26#39;ve been to Ono Hawaiian Foods, 726 Kapahulu Ave. and really enjoyed this little place. It can get busy and if you are driving, parking can be a chore, but it%26#39;s worth the wait.
My 4 year old son and I enjoyed a big bowl of poi - very ONO. As they told us to do, we added a little bit of sugar. Also found that this more authentic poi was not as lumpy as they serve the mass amounts at luaus.
I would certainly consider spam Hawaiian food and the two best places to go are Ono Hawaiian Foods and Rainbow Drive-in. Both are off of Kapahulu near the Ala Wai Golf Course.
