Kapalua, Maui Trip Report: April 19-26

DH and I stayed one night in Kahului at the Maui Seaside Inn the night we arrived. The hotel was just okay. We did this because we got in at night and wanted to make a Costco run in the morning before we drove to Kapalua. We checked in at the Kapalua Villas (KV) from April 20-26. We booked a gold oceanfront villa through Costco Travel. Our package included 6 nights, a medium sized car rental, $100 resort credit, pineapple plantation tour, and lei greeting at the airport. I think we saved about $100 a night by booking through Costco vs. booking directly through the Kapalua Resort. I posted a detailed review of the KV, but it%26#39;s submission is still pending. Overall, we were very happy with Kapalua.

Overall, the weather in Kapalua was nice. Rained Sunday afternoon. Some days were windy and cloudy, but we were expecting that for this part of the island.

DH and I stayed in our oceanfront unit a lot. We did a lot of eating, reading, sun bathing, whale watching (on a couple of days), and domino playing on our lanai.

As Kapalua Villas guests, we had access to the Ritz Carlton Pool next door. The pool had plenty of chairs. The poolside bar service was great, but pricey, as expected. Mixed drinks were $12 and beers were $6-$9.

We did the Kapaula Zip Lining. The cost was $130 per person for four lines. Tour was about 3 hours. The remaining four lines are still not open and are expected to be open in about a month or so. We would highly recommend the zip lining. The guides are great. You feel very safe. The views are amazing. And the speed was just perfect. We booked only two days ahead. I wouldn%26#39;t recommend waiting this long for larger groups, but since there were only two of us, we didn%26#39;t have a problem.

We did the Feast at Lele luau. $110 per person. The food was above average, but not great. The drinks on the other hand were great. Cost of Luau included all food, drinks, entertainment, and two leis. Service was very good.

We also did a Pineapple Plantation Tour, which was included with our package. The tour was about 3 hours long. We wouldn%26#39;t have done this normally, but were glad we did it. We learned a lot about the Kapalua land history. We picked our own pineapples, which were the best we%26#39;ve every had.

We snorkeled at Honolua Bay. We went to Honolua twice. On one day, the water visibility was great and we saw lots of stuff. On the second day, we didn%26#39;t go into the water because the swells were big. Instead, we drove to the top of the Bay and watched the many surfers. Very cool.

We snorkeled at Kapalua Bay. The snorkeling was okay. The beach is great and we were able to use towels and beach chairs at the activities center (private dive company) by staying at the Villas.

We drove up to the blow hole. The name escapes me now, but it%26#39;s the one north of Kapalua about 5 miles and is mentioned in Maui Revealed. The blow hole was not active when we went. The highest it went was about 7 feet. And that was only once or twice.

Went to the Farmers Market in Kahana. MWF 7-11am. The banana bread was great. Read about it in the forum before I went. Thanks!

Our favorite restaurants were the Paia Fish Market in Paia (great fish and chips) and CJ%26#39;s (great burger) in the Kaanapali Fairway Shops.

I would highly recommend staying at the Kapalua Villas if you are the types of folks that like to relax on your lanai and don%26#39;t need a lot of entertaining, but yet also enjoy the option of having outdoor activities nearby. Not recommended for those that want to socialize with other guests.

I%26#39;m happy to answer any questions.
