Best underwater camera for snorkeling

We will be in Maui in a couple of weeks and have planned a snorkeling trip on Trilogy.

I would like to take some photos but don%26#39;t want to spend a ton on a underwater digital camera. Can you recommend a good disposeable camera??

We have a regular digital but it is not good for underwater!

Thanks!

I just bought two kodak disposeable cameras. I was told that they take good pictures. Someone also told me that Wal Mart has an underwater digital camera for $19.95, I guess it only takes 152 pictures. I have no idea what kind of pictures it takes.

That%26#39;s not a bad price. I%26#39;ll check into that.

Keep the comments coming......

Here is a site that has been recommended in the past on TA. They certainly have a lot to choose from:

I bought one of those disposable ones from ABC (think it was a fuji) and the pics turned out pretty bleh.

Get a camera that is rated 30%26#39; or more as a depth rating %26amp; be sure to get the flash camera. Brand is not so important. Then...........

Dive down

Shoot @ an upward angle

Get close (3%26#39; max or better yet about arms length)

Don%26#39;t take the picture if you cannot see the eyes!

I had an Olympus 790, worked pretty nicely, was mostly point and shoot, got some decent pics. Was nice though because we could keep it in my pocket when at the beach or the 7 pools.

Go to a search engine and search ';Dicapac';. They make water proof camera bags (around $30) for small digital cameras. I am ordering one for my trip, so I don%26#39;t know yet how well it works personally. Read the reviews and decide for yourself.

My experience with taking pictures while snorkeling is that I only get maybe one keeper out of 4, not a good ratio for a disposable film camera. But with a digital, you can just fire away without any worry.

I tried the disposable route a couple of times and the pics were pretty bad. I would have been happier with a crayon and some construction paper. Even with my lack of art skills the fish would have been easier to recognize. I%26#39;d say to get something nice or just save the money.

Have a great trip.

here is the additional issue....

Shooting pictures underwater is different than shooting in air. Water absorbs color and changes the light.

I have seen guys with $5000.00 Pro-quality underwater systems take crappy pictures and guys with cheap disposables take very nice pictures.

The results are only partially attributable to the camera. The disposable in the hands of an experienced underwater photographer will produce great results on film. A novice with a digital MAY get lucky.....or may not.
