Aloha!
We are a family of 4 with two children, and will be staying at the Marriott KoOlina in June, and wanted to do a little snorkeling. (NOt a full day thing, just a few hours in a safe, easy access place) Could anyone give some opinions about either:
1. THe area near the Turtle Bay Resort? I am not sure where this is, I have just heard there is public access near the resort and there is snorkeling. Are there turtles in this area? and how is the snorkeling? Is it close to shore with easy access? Honestly, my one daughter prefers to snorkel with small tropical fish rather than the larger ones, which tend to scare her.
2. Wamea bay: I have read this is also good to snorkel. Are there any turtles here? Are the waters here relatively ';safe'; for swimming? I thought this was a pretty rough area some times of the year. I also read there were allot of sharks in this bay, which I was not certain if this was true.
Thanks so much for any information
Snorkeling Wamea Bay or Turtle Bay Resort?
Hanauma Bay is a good place to snorkel.
Kuilima Cove at Turtle Bay Resort is nice. You may see turtles there. When you get to the security gate there, tell them you are going to Kuilima Cove. They%26#39;ll give you a free parking pass (limited number of free spaces) %26amp; tell you where to park.
Kahe Pt. (Electric Beach) is only a couple miles from JW Marriott Ko%26#39;Olina.
Shark%26#39;s Cove is the best place to snorkel on the North Shore. It is about a mile from Waimea Bay.
North Shore will be good to snorkel during the summer. There is no big surf there in the summer.

We stayed at Turtle Bay Resort last August and found that the snorkeling was very bad. The water was very murky making the visibility very poor. Not sure if this is typical.
We’ve snorkeled with our kids at Ko’Olina (at the smallest of the bays, closest to the Paradise Cove luau) and enjoyed swimming with a turtle there but didn’t see tons of fish. Since its “right in your backyard” that might be a good first try, and if you all love snorkeling, try Hanauma Bay next.
You are staying in a great place for beginning snorkelers; in fact there are some tours that take people to Ko Olina. I would suggest Lagoon two, turtles come in to feed off the algae in the morning and evening. I wouldn’t take beginners to Turtle Bay resort, you defiantly need foot protection and I think you see more fish in the Ko Olina Lagoons.
Waimea Bay is also alright but if your kids are very small just know that the walk into the ocean is not gradual and can catch you by surprise. Some of the better snorkeling is also a little deeper out. I have never heard of sharks in the bay.
Right near Waimea Bay is Sharks Cove and Three Tables, no Shark’s Cove was not named because of Shark sightings. These are great area’s to snorkel with kids although it can get crowded.
These are probably the easiest area’s to access from you part of the island. If you have any other questions I highly suggest the book “Oahu Revealed” although take what they say about lack of activities/restaurants on the west side with a grain of salt, there IS more than meets the eye.
We stayed at the JW at Ko%26#39;olina last June. Our favorite beach was Waimea Bay. There is a sand bar area that is great for little ones. My kids and the adults loved the snorkeling. There were tons of fish and turtles. My daughter held onto a float while she snorkeled, which worked great. Have a great trip!
