renting snorkel equipment

Are there any recommended businesses for renting snorkel equipment? Or are they everywhere and comparable? We%26#39;re staying on the east side of the Island.

Great question. I was also wondering if it%26#39;s recommended to bring your own equipment. I%26#39;ve heard that sometimes purchasing your own is just a little more than renting. Plus, we%26#39;ll be on two different parts of the island during our 9 day trip and don%26#39;t want to have to drive back to drop it back off if it%26#39;s not on our way. Any thoughts on this?

Last week Snorkel Bob%26#39;s had a coupon in one of the magazines you get from the car rental agencies in Kauai (we got it from Alamo it included maps of the island) advertising a week rental of snorkel equipment for 9 bucks. If I remember correctly if you brought your spouse/significant other they got their equipment on that same 9 bucks. Wife and I were kicking ourselves for not seeing this coupon.

Keenshoe, what did you pay for your snorkel equipment rental? The coupon price you mentioned is excellent! I wouldn%26#39;t even consider bringing my own equipment if the rentals are even close to that.

We bring our own masks and snorkels but rent fins (just like to avoid dealing with them in luggage). We get them from Snorkel Bob:

There are two shops on Kauai---Koloa and Kapaa. You can return your gear to whichever store is more convenient. They have a range of rental packages for a complete set--a pretty cheap set that comes with a very basic mask. It%26#39;s fine for most people.

We decided years ago to buy masks to ensure a really good fit. With rentals, it can be hit or miss. I can always find fins and a snorkel that I%26#39;m satisfied with, but masks can be tricky. Every face and head is different and one mask doesn%26#39;t fit everyone really well. If you ever do decide to buy a mask, I%26#39;d suggest going to a dive shop, trying on every mask in the shop and getting advice from a salesperson. I%26#39;d definitely suggest going to a dive shop rather than a general sporting goods store because you%26#39;re more likely to find a salesperson who knows what they%26#39;re talking about and can assist you in selecting the best fitting mask. I wouldn%26#39;t buy masks online just because i want to try them on. Getting a good deal on gear that doesn%26#39;t fit well isn%26#39;t really such a good deal.

The most expensive gear won%26#39;t necessarily guarantee the best fit. My wife%26#39;s mask cost a bit more than mine, but it%26#39;s a lousy fit on my face. It fits her perfectly. I was actually ready to spend more on my mask than I did, but the one I selected was the best fit.

Oops--you%26#39;ll have to copy and paste that link for Snorkel Bob:

Durn, I still can%26#39;t work around it. Google: Snorkelbob

Just go to snorkelbob.com and look at their rental rates.

The coupon may still be in the Car Rental companies magazine that they give you when you rent from them that has all the maps in it.

Wife and I paid 22 bucks each for a week rental in Hanalei that included the split mask, fins and snorkel with carry bag. (it was close to where we were staying)

Just be careful of those adds promising a lower rate. We found that with another company on Kauai (can%26#39;t remember the name, but they are located within the beach house restaurant building), the lower rate meant the lowest quality gear only. The better stuff would be at their usual rate.

We used Snorkel bob%26#39;s gear and it was fine.

We just got back from Kauai on Saturday and were staying at the Kauai Coast Resort on the East coast. Snorkel Bob%26#39;s was almost within walking distance to our place and had great rates. Also, the guy there was very friendly and helpful which was good because my wife had never been snorkeling before and was a bit nervous. The 24hr return came in handy as well.

We paid $9.00 per set per day for their high end package. We only snorkelled for two days otherwise we would have gotten them for the week.

We swear by Snorkel Bob%26#39;s. We were in a pinch, long story, and rented our son%26#39;s equipment from Pedal n Paddle, which offered much better customer service but inferior equipment. Snorkel Bob%26#39;s every time. And you get a better deal if you rent ahead of time on their website. And you get a hat. :)
