Lava Update - Public Viewing Area (9-6-08)

On Sept 6th from 1900 (7pm) to 2100 (9pm) lava continued to flow into the ocean creating spectacular littoral explosions. With nightfall came the red glow, and the moon. The moon lit up the smoke plume and created a subtle reflection off the ocean. The moons placement was right in the heart of scorpio (a star constellation). Great for photos with the right settings and a tripod. With the right camera you can still capture the constellation of Mauis Hook (tail of scorpio) hovering over the ocean entry.

Be advised that current conditions do not allow for up close lava viewing. Closest proXimity at this time is from public viewing area about 1/2 mile.

What to bring:

-Closed toe shoes

-Water

-Flashlights

-Padding for the okole

-Camera with extra batteries

From Hilo follow HWY 11 south to HWY 130. Turn on 130 and go to the end, past the gate and private residence signs. Follow newly paved road to end. Somebody will be there to help with parking. Open from 1400 (2pm) to 2200 (10pm). Last car in at 2000 (8pm).

Lava Update - Public Viewing Area (9-6-08)

Ditto what lovemydoggy said! We are leaving on Friday and your updates are SOOOO welcome. I read the HVO update daily but the technical language makes my head hurt. Fully plan to be standing at that lava viewing sight in 8 days! :)

Ditto the above posts! We do not leave for @ 70 days, but watch for your reports so we are better prepared! Mahalo, Mahalo, Mahalo!

Thank you! We leave in 10 sleeps! We were curious how close we could get %26amp; if there was any visible lava. Cheers!

I was just there on the 5th and it was amazing! I also suggest bringing an umbrella or poncho, just as our group walked to the end and arrived at the viewing area the skies opened up and it poured, my girlfriend and i where the only 2 out of the 8 people in our group that had umbrellas with us.
