Would you live there if you could afford it?

Just wondering. If you could afford to live in Maui would you move there?

I know a few people who would consider it. My wife is not one of them, she would prefer a summer vacation there but would never live there.

I would if I had the resources to move there. It%26#39;s funny because last year returning the rental car, the guy checking it in asked us where we were from and we said Los Angeles. He asked what part and we told him West Covina, turns out he used to live a few blocks from our place. We asked him why he moved out to Maui and he said, ';Cause it%26#39;s Maui.';

Would you live there if you could afford it?

I%26#39;ve actually researched it fairly thoroughly to see what it would really take to do it. If I could, I would, but right now, I don%26#39;t see a way to make it really work for me and my family. Maybe later on after the kids are on their own. If I could make it work, I%26#39;d be ready to start packing right now.

Would you live there if you could afford it?

No. I%26#39;ve heard mostly negative things about the school system there. I also wouldn%26#39;t want to move away from friends and family. And though I love a tropical vacation, I don%26#39;t like that much humidity.

I lived on a tropical island for a year. It sounds really nice and in fact it was but, living somewhere magical (like Maui) and just being able to visit there once in awhile are two different things. I don%26#39;t think we would ever consider a move to Maui even if we could afford it. I am afraid we would lose the magic, even just a little would be bad. Being from the midwest virtually all our family is here and that would mean long flights to see them.

I can see (and actually am planning on) extended visits when we reitre in a couple years, say 2 or 3 months at a time. Not every year certainly but maybe evey other or every 3rd year.

Yeah I was saddened to hear that teachers/police officers/fire dept. officials are all paid much lower wages than on the Mainland. At the same time there is a shortage of teachers too.

We moved to Oahu from CA. I loved it, my husband not so much. The public schools stink, the private schools are much better than what I have access to hin CA. We moved back to CA because of a job, but I kept the house. I intend to move back.

I%26#39;ll answer from a day-dream perspective. I%26#39;d have a place in Hawaii (haven%26#39;t been to Maui, going in Oct.). So, it could be Maui or Kaui where we were for our honeymoon.

I%26#39;d have a place along the central coast in California that would be our home base.

And, someplace back east so we could be near family.

And maybe a mountain cabin somewhere in Colorado for skiing.

Any other day-dreamers?

I would move to Maui in a heart-beat ... would love to open a bookstore there. Given that I married ';AquaBoy,'; I doubt DH would mind. My main concern is acceptance by the other residents.

interesting question....I moved here n the late 90%26#39;s from California.... I choose the big island because of the size and variety compared to other islands. Driving around the island is the equal to driving from Los Angeles to Modesto.. or Las Vegas.

I found Maui too touristy and too much like southern calif...hence Big island was the choice. Now you would be a fool to come here and expect to work for anythong more than min-wage.. Even doctors are poorly paid. Good jobs go to locals. Hawaiians not mainlanders. So this is a place to retire to when you have made your fortune. How much do you need a year to live a simple mid to lower mid class life.. about $55K a year

My reasons for moving were 1. property tax 1/6 of that in california. 2. Homes 20 to 30% cheaper than in california, 3. Terrorism.... hawaii is off everybodys radar and in nobodys sphere of influence.

4. Quality of life.. no immigration issues and warm but not hot temps all year long........

No, I don%26#39;t want to live on Maui or Oahu or any of the islands.

Remember what the former Californian%26#39;s job is. It%26#39;s probably one of three jobs he holds down so he can afford to live in a cramped apartment and eat Spam. (Painting with broad strokes here, folks!)

We%26#39;re very happy to live one month on Maui, escaping Midwest winter for a while. I don%26#39;t think we could stay more than two months before rock fever would set in. (I remember a cyber friend who couldn%26#39;t wait to get back to the mainland after years on Big Island; she wanted to %26#39;drive somewhere%26#39;!)

';Vacationing'; is not the same as day-to-day living regardless of the place. Mike, my uncle and his family lived on Kauai after WWII for about ten years...until their sons were school age. They moved to West Covina. LOL

This might be a silly question but what are DH and DW?
