For us real oldtimers ...what do you remember?

The first time that I went to Maui was in 1969. It was so quiet then with just a few hotels on Kaanapali beach..and the building of the Whaler%26#39;s village.

I remember the airport when they rolled the stairway to the plane and you picked up your luggage in an open air bin.

The Auntie Emma Sharpe show at the Sheraton. We went once and I still remember the haunting melody of a hula dedicated to David kalakaua (sorry...spelling) If anyone knows of at cd with their performance I would love to know about it.

The old bungalows at the Sheraton (our son as a baby stayed in one with us).

And when Lahaina was just a square and very empty past the Pioneer Inn...yes, a bit scary.

Does anyone else have memories?

For us real oldtimers ...what do you remember?

Oh yes..the bungalows at the Sheraton..on our first visit we stayed in a bungalow. Walked 50 feet to the water. Sat outside on the lanai and watched the cliff divers on Blackrock.

Kihei had many vacants lots on Kihei road.

Ahihi Cove had live coral just as you enter by the old ramp.

tears....

For us real oldtimers ...what do you remember?

I remember when airfare, rental car and 7 nights at the Hyatt was under $700 and I still had money in my wallet after bringing only $300 with me and no credit card. (Didn%26#39;t have a credit card when I was 18).

Which leads me to my next remembrances, you only had to be 18 to rent a car and the drinking age was 18.

Very nice Elle! Great vibes from 1969. Wish I had seen and experienced that type of Maui. Oh you can never go back home.

First time I went to Maui, was 1986 (and I was 7..ha!). We stayed at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel. It was wonderful. I thought that area was too developed though even at that time. I remember we went to Hana and I think every where else on Maui, even making sure we went to a darn luau. I remember buying Ms. Caddy a lei with purple flowers, that was given to her at the airport. I never forget her wearing itand she%26#39;s not a beach gal. She put it down on the sand and I took a picture of the lei. I can remember her words to this day. ';It looks like something you%26#39;d wear at a funeral!'; Now, isn%26#39;t that romantic friends. But it was HER idea to go to Maui. No Kai Oi! :) And I don%26#39;t think I would have ever gone without her to begin with.

I remember calling back home to my beloved Dad. He had just had catarack surgery, and instead of staying, I went to Maui with his strong encouragement. I remember how excited he was when I told him I had seen whales. He then went and told all his church people that his son had been to Hawaii vacationing and had seen whales. Alas, he never saw Maui.

Maui brings back lots of great memories and they are not always about Hawaii. And sometimes it is! On that trip we went to sunrise at Hale. I froze my bu** off! And we got up at 2am to catch the darn bus tour! But cudding with Ms. Caddy was good! And I remember being able to take my inlaws to Maui and enjoy it, especially since my dear mil has past.

For any of you out there that haven%26#39;t been to Maui, or Hawaii, life%26#39;s too short. Do yourself a favor and visit! Thanks for reading! Caddy

trixee..

in 68-69 , $700 was an good monthly wage factored into todays $$$ it would compare to $6000 per mo.

Lahaina.... with no shops...the Tempura shop.

Maui Airport was steel open air sheetmetal wwII huts..

Molikini saw only 12 to 20 people a day.... or less

No development in Wailea... Kehi was a little mall of 8 shops. Star Market...only market

Sugar mill running full tilt in Lahaina... no Hyatt, no Marriott..... nothing over 5 stories.

Forgive me, I think my first trip was back in 1984? I was in pink diapers, of course. You know it%26#39;s been a long time ago when you can%26#39;t remember you first trip dates.

Oh heck, John McCain is 72; why am I worrying?

That%26#39;s some very good stuff HawaiiDan! :)

Dan - my first trip was in 1981. Still took me a long time to save up that money though. Months and months. But my two girlfriends and I were determined to go.

My husband%26#39;s uncle used to take tours to Hawaii in the 1960%26#39;s. He was the president of a statewide association and would offer the tour to his members. He told us about the cane fields behind what is now the Sheraton Maui ... and what happened when they were burned (read: rats take a vacation at the Sheraton Maui!) He had a ball with his Hawaiian hosts and his large groups of friends on Oahu and Maui. DH and I offered to escort him back ... but he always turned us down. He liked us to offer though, and always wanted to hear about our adventures in Hawaii as well.

My teenage daughter wears some of my cherished CrazyShirts that I bought when I was younger than she is: Here Today, Gone To Maui, and another one that says Maui 74, and a 73...She calls them vintage. I call them old, but treasured memories.

Elle, I am Kiliban (?) cat crazy! I have numerous crazy shirts which I still wear in Maui and here. One with those cats all over Maui. One with those cats all over Hawaii. And a classic Crazy Shirts that says ';Amber Ale'; in red...my all time favorite. I have a polo that has the cat putting and the mouse on the sleeve holding the flag. I am Kiliban crazy and will always be.

Don%26#39;t even ask me how many fish ';Sargent Leisure'; t-shirts I have either!

BTW, I have Kiliban stuffed cats all over this study, Kiliban cat mouse pad (HA!), and even a Kiliban cat screen saver. The wife of K had a falling out business wide with Crazy shirts a number of years ago.

The only thing I don%26#39;t have is a Kiliban cat wearing a pink speedo. But I%26#39;ve got keychains...shot glasses, and one that stays in the Caddyshackmobile permanently.

Sorry to go off post. I even have Kiliban cat note pads. Like cat pads...hee...hee.

I%26#39;ve always associated it with Hawaii from a few years ago, just like Sargent Leisure...see I%26#39;m back on track!
