My friend will need to rent a good bike for the upcoming lavaman triathalon on Mar 29 2009. Does anyone know of any good bike shops to call? We will be staying at the Fairway Villas in Waikoloa starting mar 25. Also any tips on shipping a bike would be helpful although we think this might be too expensive. Thanks for any info.

contact the Bike Works in kona...in old industrial park
You can ship a bike... they sell special cases where you take the bike wheels off and the bike fits.
The airlines charge a special fee of $150.00 each way to fly it as baggage. so figure as a guess case and baggage charge would be about $500-600.

Dan gave you the name of the best Bike shop nearest to you. However fit is everything with a bike, I would imagine even more so for a triathalon.. I would consider paying for the shipping as luggage option.
We are going to Kona at the end of October and were also wanting to ship our bikes. The prices quoted in an earlier post, are correct according to the info I recieved from Hawaiian Air. I have also looked into shipping via UPS ($295+insurance from Portland, OR) and have found it to be outrageous, as it is per bike, and one way delivery. Besides paying for the packaging, shipping, if you may also have to pay for assembly, if you would not be doing it yourself.
I contacted Bike Works, (808)326-2453, and spoke with Keith. He quoted $60 (24 hrs), $45 (2-3 days). It sounded as though they have quite a variety of bikes to choose from. He gave me a list of the bike models in our sizes. I have contacted our local bike shop, and they are letting us %26#39;test ride%26#39; each of the bikes to see which one we each like best.
I wish you the best of luck. I will post how our experience was with our bike rentals.
Peace,
M
