someone seriously hurt visiting falls? yesterday? need info

Has anyone heard on the news today of a visitor hurt at one of the falls late yesterday? We%26#39;re in Kauai now and lost reception on the radio as this story came on an hour or two ago. We did hear ';Falls'; but not which one. And we heard Search and Rescue flew in by heli, but had to stay overnight (last night) with the victim before flying him out to Waimea medical emergency center (not really sure of the correct name for this facility, but did hear Waimea) where he is in critical condition. We came in to our rental and watched the news but did%26#39;t see the story.

We hiked the trail into Hanakapi%26#39;ai falls yesterday and saw a lot of people hiking irresponsibly, so we were concerned. Does anyone have details on this? Thanks. We%26#39;re praying for him tonight.

I think this is the story:

Man falls from mule, sustains injuries

by The Garden Island

KOKE‘E — A trio riding mules in Koke‘e late last week became the subjects of a search and rescue when one of them fell and hit his head, resulting in severe injuries.

The man, a 70-year-old Kekaha resident, is in stable condition at The Queen’s Medical Center after the Kukui Trail accident in Koke‘e last Friday night.

The man and two friends were riding mules when they left the trailhead at around 10 p.m. and set off on a hunting expedition. About an hour later, the Kekaha man fell off his mule and hit his head on a rock.

One of the men exited the trail and called for help.

Four firefighters from the Waimea station responded to the call...

No, I don%26#39;t think that was it. Even if we heard ';falls'; and misinterpreted it, it did say ';last night'; the EMTs had to stay with the man at the location, and today he was listed in ';critical condition';. That much we heard.

Nothing regarding any water fall incidents on the GIN website. ( Garden Island News )

The local news will be on TV at the gym this morning, and will also check with members as they arrive.

Hopefully, none of our posters and TA readers are thinking about hiking down cliffs at water falls. Not a good plan for those of you heading over.

We did hear about the mule incident a couple of days ago, but not aware of anything else at this time.

You are very correct about a lot of the people who hike Hanakapiai, even on the first two miles just to the beach.

Could be that they were at Ke%26#39;e beach and just decided to take a hike. Some were still dripping wet from being in the ocean.

Many look like they do not do any exercise all year long. We even see them hiking in flipflops and swimsuits. A few will have hiking boots, and some more senior folks with walking sticks.

at Hanakpoiai, wee have also witnessed tourists with badly sprained, or broken ankles. Their companions with no cluee as to how to properly handle getting the injured victims out of there. And refusing assistance or any suggestions for the victims safety.

Anyway, we will see what we can find out, if someone else does not advise us on this board.

KONG radio in the morning, with Ron Wylie is pretty good about getting the word out. The other DJ%26#39;s do not seem to do many updates.

Many of the trails that we hike, we do not meet many other people. Sometimes none at all.

When we do, they look like they are experienced. It is Much more peaceful, and we all are able to enjoy the natural beauty without the busyness of humanity that places like Hanakapiai seem to have.

Last week we hiked the lovely forest Water Tank-Berry Flat trails, and did not see one other human.

Our car was the only one at the trail head parking area.

Happy trecking, and mahalo for your concern about the person you heard about on the radio.

Painter,

Just returned from work and no one knows anything about the report you heard.

Nothing in the morning GIN.

If that did happen, usually everyone on island, at least the residents, are aware of it.
