Flower Farms on Oahu? Or Wait Til We Get To The Big Island?

One of the highlights of our previous trip to your gorgeous state was stopping at a flower farm on Maui and ordering up gift boxes to send home instead of the usual souvenirs. Everybody who received one was wild about it, and we had such fun looking over the farm and placing our order. (In case you%26#39;re interested, Nahiku Tropicals was the farm, and we%26#39;ve ordered online several times since as well - highly recommended)

Returning next week (woohoo!!!) to two new (for us) islands. First a week on Oahu then a week on BI. We wanted to do the flower stop early in our vacation, but when I google flower farms for Oahu, very little other than orchid farms comes up. Prefer a variety of cut flowers, not just orchids. Big Island, on the other hand, has many flower farms.

So, anyone have a secret favorite we can visit? We will have a car, and plan on exploring the whole island (staying on the North Shore). Or should we wait and see on the Big Island - perhaps more competition, so better quality and prices there?

Mahalo in advance!

Flower Farms on Oahu? Or Wait Til We Get To The Big Island?

Wait for the big Island. There are very few retail flower farms on Oahu, many, many many on BI. When I was living on island, I used to have the Hawaii Florist and growers as clients so i can tell you that the BI has a large % of the growers, then Maui (few on Oahu). I can%26#39;t reccomend anyone specific but I do know that the Antheriums make lovely gifts, ship well and last long. They look like you sent a boquet of hearts!

Thank you Kailuamom!

How fortunate for me that you saw my post.

I will wait for the BI. Think I%26#39;ll post over there and get some local favorites.

joanelle .... I don%26#39;t see waiting for the BI as a great way of sending flowers unless you know exactly what flowers you are looking for. If I am looking for the Dendrobium orchids, than I would purchase them on the BI, usually in the Mountain View area as I return to the hotel from the volcano area.

When you order flowers to be sented home to the mainland, you don%26#39;t get to see the flowers that are selected for your purchase. Just the pictures to order from.

As I use my florist, I do get to select the type of flowers that I like, whether, I select a box of tropicals mix assortments or just plain anthuriums, each flower stem is packed separately and boxed with an agricultural stamp to be sented airmail or carried on the plane.

I have seen anthuriums last over a week packed in a box and orchids leis taken to the mainland, only, to be brought home and used 10 days later.

If you want some suggestion or my florist, let me know ..... I am constantly sending tropicals to the mainland.

Good luck .....

Islekane, I figured if I visited the grower, I%26#39;d get better prices and fresher flowers than if I visited the florist (the middle man?). Is that not the case?

Either way, I%26#39;d like to learn the name of your florist, we will visit them if you think the prices and selection would be similar to waiting and visiting the actual flower farms on Big Island. Thank you.

(Our experience with Nahiku has been that the flowers are carefully packed and last very very long, about three or four weeks. Not looking for just orchids necessarily, but a variety of tropical blooms.)

Joanelle - this can%26#39;t help with your search, but if you want Hawaiian flowers for yourself, check out the airport before you fly home to the mainland. The bouquets they sell in the gift shops are cleared to travel so you can bring them on the plane. I bought a bunch, wrapped wet paper towels around them with a plastic bag and laid them in the overhead compartment. When I got home, had some great flowers to remind me of my trip. I live in Chicago and they made the trip fine.

What%26#39;s nice is depending on the type you get, you can dry them and I have permanent reminders of my trips in vases around my house. :)

Ooh! I like that idea, cruisin%26#39; tigger! Thanks!
