My husband and I are going for our first overseas trip to Honolulu in November. I was wondering if we needed an international drivers licence? I spoke to the NRMA today and they told me it was %26#39;recommended, but not compulsory.%26#39; We are only renting a car for the day to drive around the island and paying $50 each for an international drivers licence seems like a lot for just one days use of a car. I did read an email on here dated 2006 saying that I wouldn%26#39;t need one - just wondering if things have changed since then?
Thank you,
Lesley
International drivers licence - help fellow Aussies!
Hi Johnsy
When I was going to Hawaii I sent an e-mail to Honolulu PD and asked if my swedish driverlicens was OK. I got a fast respons telling me that I needed nothing else and they also give me some tips about rush-hours and so on, real aloha spirit.
International drivers licence - help fellow Aussies!
i believe its only %26#39;recomended%26#39; that you get an international drivers license - i went to the US and they were fine with viewing my australian drivers license. so you should be fine!
Thank you both.
Lesley
We were there last year and my husband and best friend did not need an International license.
They were more than happy with the Aussie one :)
Have a great time!
You don%26#39;t need an international licence, we were there in December and accepted Australian licence with no problems.
No you dont need a international drivers licence an Aussie one is fine in USA.
Do they accept New Zealand drivers licence?
According to the State of Hawaii website a foreign driver%26#39;s license is valid for one year with a passport to show date of entry.
An international drivers license is a document that translates your license into many languages. So, if you are driving with a license that is in english you don%26#39;t need the IDL.
Great info, thanks all. We are not travelling until 2010 but thats one less thing to have to worry about. Was in the Cook Islands in June and had to get a Cook Islands licence for $10 from the local Police station, at least the driving was on the left side of the road........I am nominating my hubby to drive on the ';other'; side in Honolulu!!!

If you have a licence from an english speaking country and going to another english speaking country, you do not need an international drivers licence
