My husband and I are taking our son to Oahu (from Kauai) for his 5th birthday this November. We%26#39;ve lived here for 8 years, and never been to Oahu for pleasure, only business. We%26#39;ll be staying one night in Waikiki @ Aqua Aloha Surf, and will be taking our boy to Hawaiian Waters the next day...I have heard nothing but horror stories re: parking in Waikiki...can somebody from the area please tell me if there is a good alternative for transportation to Kapolei from Waikiki...other than a rental car? Seems a waste of $$ even at Kamaina rates if we need to spend an hour looking for a parking spot to pay for...any input would be much appreaciated! And on that note, any thoughts as to where to head to for a ';special for a 5 year old dinner?'; Hard Rock Cafe? (No Chucky Cheese, Please!)
Mahalo!

OK - The parking at Hawaiian Waters is fine and I think you would regret trying to get to Kapolei from Waikiki any other way than a rental car - sorry.
My kids love love love Dave and Busters which is by the Ward Warehouse Mall, near the movie theatre in Waikiki. We have gone there for the kids birthdays. Even though it is adult focused with a full bar, it is all video games. We are back in CA and my kids remind me of their fun times at D%26amp;B. The other thing he might love (although for you I prefer D%26amp;B) would be Chucky Cheeses. There is one in Pearl City and one in I think Hawaii Kai (or near there).
It sounds like he will have such a great time!!!

Aqua Hotels %26amp; Resorts is offering a ';snooze-n-crooze'; special to all guests that includes a room, rental car and complimentary daily parking. The offer is available at 11 of Aqua%26#39;s Waikiki hotels.
ResortQuest is running a kama%26#39;aina special that includes free parking through December at its Waikiki and Neighbor Island properties.

Call %26amp; ask them about the offer.
Otherwise, pay the $18 for parking at Aqua Aloha Surf. You should be able to get by with paying for only one day. If you need parking in Waikiki for a short time period, you can park along Ala Wai Blvd for free. They have 24 hour free parking, but its hard to find after 6pm. Also a couple days a week, they close Ala Wai Blvd for street cleaning from 8am-noon. Mondays %26amp; Fridays (I think).
Ny granddaughter likes to go ice skating at Ice Palace (near Aloha Stadium). she%26#39;s had several birthday parties there. But it is with several of her friends. Don%26#39;t know how it would be with just one child.
Not having been exposed to such facilities on the mainland, your son is of the perfect age to enjoy the Hawaii Children%26#39;s Discovery Center in the Kakaako Waterfront Park between Waikiki and Downtown.
Check-out their website at:
http://www.discoverycenterhawaii.org/
Other things he is certain to enjoy are the Waikiki Aquarium (one of the nation%26#39;s oldest), see:
http://www.waquarium.org/
And the Honolulu Zoo (smallish but has won some recent awards), see:
http://www.honoluluzoo.org/
Both are located in Kapiolani Park, between Waikiki and Diamond Head, and are of just the right size for a 5 year-old%26#39;s attention span.
D%26amp;B%26#39;s would make a fine choice for a special dinner, with the multi-plex theaters right there if you want to make a bigger event out of it.
Another alternative nearby would be the Old Spaghetti Factory. Inexpensive, boisterous and fun. The Honolulu location is at Ward Warehouse, just a half-block away from D%26amp;Bs.
Its a franchise, but still a classic. See:
