Kapaa or Princeville? Dec/Jan vacation with 3 under 8!

We are trying to figure out the best place to stay on Kauai - we have three little ones 8, 6 and 7 months...a condo of course is preferable! We are wondering about location. I am thinking Kapaa is pretty central - and Lydgate should be good for the girls. Any recommendations for condos? Or things to look out for?

I am also drawn to the north side of the island - it looks so pretty (although I haven%26#39;t found any part of Kauai that doesn%26#39;t look pretty yet!). Looking for not too busy of a spot - does Kapaa get really busy?

Thanks for any advice input!

What about Poipu? It is less busy than Kapaa and there are some great places for the kids. We love Baby%26#39;s Beach but there are only rental houses in that area. Also, Poipu %26amp; Brennecke%26#39;s Beach are great for kids and there are a ton of condos available. Please search on the forum for ';Poipu Condos';.

The ocean conditions tend to be more favorable on the south shore in December and January.

Thank you for your advice - the problem we are having is that there isn%26#39;t much available esp south. Lots to the north and a smattering on the east side. Apparently we should have booked LAST year at this time!

I will look again around Poipu...I had thought that the south would be more over-run with partying types. Maybe I am wrong?

Thanks again in advance for any wisdom offered!

';Party types';? Sorry, that is kind of funny. Kauai rolls in the carpets around 9:00 p.m. Very quiet. Kauai is nothing like Maui or Waikiki.

Are you looking for a house or condo? I spoke with a a gal at ParrishKauai and she said folks are just now making their plans for Christmas. Are you coming over then or after New Year%26#39;s?

Some of the websites have online availability.

We personally like Poipu Kai and Nihi Kai. Nihi Kai building 200 is close to the pool. Poipu Kai, Manualhoa Building 1 is close to the beach.

With the ages of your girls they would love Wailpouli Beach Resort. Yes Kapaa is a busy area because it is the shopping area for the locals living around there. You would have to drive to Lydgate but it is just 5 minutes down the road. Poipu of course would be a wonderful location, but the East side might work well because of your family size and the baby. You would have a lot of fast type restaurants close by and be centrally located to visit many sights. Here%26#39;s a very good blog about traveling with a baby.

The North Shore is absolutely gorgeous but in Dec you will be driving every day to Lydgate to swim as the ocean conditions are pretty rough that time of year. Take a day trip to the NS.

Better hurry with reserving. Many of the nicer condos are booked or booking fast.

Yes, Kapaa will be busy. And they have nasty traffic as well. I would stay in Poipu for better weather and take day trips to other parts of the island. Actually, I would go to Maui.

North Kauai is almost certain to be cool, windy and rainy then. You%26#39;ll want Poipu or Kapaa. If that doesn%26#39;t pan out, try anywhere on Maui south of Kapalua and Napili, which will also be having winter weather. Maui has a larger stock of condos and restaurants and it has plenty of good beaches.

Traffic in Kapa`a simply isn%26#39;t that bad. You don%26#39;t want to be on the road around 3:30, as it gets slow in both directions, but the fact is it%26#39;s not bad at most any other time of day. Even ';bad'; is relative; it moves. You%26#39;re not in hours of stop-and-go; the town just isn%26#39;t that big.

Thanks for the advice guys!

I am not worried about Kapa%26#39;a traffic - we don%26#39;t plan to be out driving around all the time anyway!

Upon your advice, we have looked at Poipu (glad to hear that it isn%26#39;t party-central!). We have eyed up a spot in Makahuena - does anyone have any commentary on that area? It has an ocean view (over a cliff), but a walk to the beach (which is fine with us). Anything else we should know?

Still haven%26#39;t ruled out a condo in the Kapa%26#39;a area at a place called Pono Kai. I have read that the beach isn%26#39;t that great right there but Lydgate is a 10 minute walk? Does that sound right?

I am also wondering with these VRBO condos - how do you know if you are getting a dump or not? Just hope the pictures are from this year and not a decade ago?

BTW - we DID look at Maui but the availability is very low - we are planning a month starting early Dec/to Jan. Yeah! A month on Kauai!! It should be lovely!! My preference was for Kauai anyway - so I think it is kismet!

Calgarymom,

Toanswer your question: ';Still haven%26#39;t ruled out a condo in the Kapa%26#39;a area at a place called Pono Kai. I have read that the beach isn%26#39;t that great right there but Lydgate is a 10 minute walk? Does that sound right?';

NO, Lydgate Park is about 3 miles down the road from Pono Kai. I%26#39;m not sure I would call that a 10 minute walk. It would take about 10 minutes to DRIVE there.

Marti

Pono Kai is just OK in my book. Look at Kaha Lani. That is a 2 minute WALK to Lydgate Park. Much nicer condos.
