In Hawaii and wanting to go elsewhere for diving- suggestion

I will be in Hawaii for a week in Feb. I%26#39;d like to go elsewhere to dive for another week. It seems like flights from Hawaii to everyplace else in the Pacific are crazy expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Flights everywhere are pretty expensive. What were you looking for someplace like Tahiti?

You ';might'; get to Australia cheaper but most of the islands in the Pacific are pricey to get to and stay on.

Did you check Hawaiian Air which has routes from HNL to:

Papeete (Tahiti, French Polynesia then fly Air Tahiti to other islands/atolls like Rangiroa)

Pago Pago (American Samoa)

Sydney (you%26#39;ll have to take a sep flight to Cairns to get to Great Barrier Reef)

Manila (Phillipines, may still be running initial specials)

I don%26#39;t believe HA%26#39;s flight prices are that ';crazy'; expensive.

Or you may want to check on Qantas, which can also fly/stopover to Fiji

well....diving not as good in Tahiti or Rangaroa...unless you like diving passes with BIG fish. There is only one flight a week from Hawaii to Tahiti...on Hawaiian saturday ariving about 10 pm it then turns around and retutns.

Fiji... the north island Vana Levu/Taveneui are the bast.. However the best fare will be out of LA, so you will have to fly back to LA to catch it I Am not sure there is service Honolulu to Fiji...Air Pacific may... Air New Zealand stopped service several years ago.

For Australia, only Air Canada and Hawaiian, Quantas serve Sydney from Honolulu. since it is a small market.. the prices will be high and service/aircraft not great. Suggest for best fares return to LAX for the Sydney.

Anyway you look at it your goint to be spending several grand for just the tickets.... let alone the ground/diving costs

I have dove all these sites over the years...Fiji is the standout..rangaroa the biggest dissapointment

for feb 09... here are some sample fares from Hawaii and LAX.

LA..Fiji.....$1280 ( about 500 cheaper than from Hawaii)

I suggest you get a ticket for Fiji from your home with a stopover in Honolulu....continuing to Nadi.

Check Kayak..... you get a one way stopover on that lonf a route.

Not that I%26#39;ve been there, but the Philippines looks like your least expensive option

$474 each way Honolulu to Manila.

Food, accomodations, etc should also be far less expensive in the Philippines than other Pacific diving destinations as well as many sites to visit like the Banaue Rice Terraces (a World Heritage site) and popular Boracay beaches

I could understand your desire to fit in additional Pacific diving spots since you%26#39;re flying all the way from Florida. Fiji and its famed soft corals are a premier destination, and your best option is to fly from LAX on either Air Pacific or Qantas (NOT Quantas).
